Hann Named AVCA Thirty Under 30 Award Winner
The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) has announced the second annual Thirty Under 30 High School Awards. This overall Thirty Under 30 award was created in 2009 to honor up-and-coming coaching talent at all levels of the sport, and in 2016 it was expanded for exclusively high school coaches. Among this year's 30 recipients is Coosa High School’s head girls volleyball coach, Nic Hann. Hann is only one of two coaches in the state of Georgia to win this award.
Hann believes that volleyball can teach players lessons in order to succeed in life and wants to always push them to become better players, but more importantly, great friends, wives, parents, and overall, outstanding people of integrity.
“This sport teaches young people how to communicate effectively, how to work well together--even with people you may not always get along with, how to love the person standing next to you, and how to push yourself in order to become a better version of you,” said Hann. “I try to approach my team with the philosophy that winning is not the most important thing that we do. Getting better as players and, more importantly, as people, each and every point is our focus. It is for these moments that I coach my players.”
Hann began his first year of coaching volleyball during Coosa High’s inaugural season in the fall of 2011. For the first two years of the program, he served as the junior varsity coach and varsity assistant coach. He helped lead the team to the first round of the state playoffs in only the second year as a program in 2012. Hann became the varsity head coach in 2013, leading the team to the Class AA Sweet Sixteen. In 2014 and 2015, the Lady Eagles advanced to the Class AA Elite 8, and in 2016, the team competed for the Class AA state title, finishing as the state runner-up. In 2017, the team won its first state title, becoming the first public school to win a Class AA title in volleyball. The team has also won four straight area championships (2014-2017). In his sixth season as Coosa’s head coach, the team’s record is 211-73.
“Mr. Hann being named one of the top thirty under 30 high school volleyball coaches in the country is well deserved. He is the epitome of what a teacher and coach should be,” said Coosa High principal La Donna Turrentine. “He was voted as CHS Teacher of the Year by his peers because he has high expectations of all his students. He pushes them in a way to where they love learning. It’s reflected in his coaching, as well, because he pushes his team to the limit to get the best out of them and that’s resulted in a state championship.”
