Important Student Safety Message- Social Media Challenges
This is Rick Flanigen, Chief Safety and Security Officer for Floyd County Schools with an important message regarding inappropriate student behaviors that have been influenced by social media challenges.
Recently on the video-sharing social media platform, TikTok, students have been participating in the “devious lick challenge”.
This TikTok “challenge” encourages students to damage or steal things from their local schools. The damage to date within our school system ranges from stealing teachers’ personal belongings to tearing urinals off of walls. Not only is this a significant disruption to the learning process for our students, but it’s also causing detrimental damage to our local and state-funded facilities.
There is zero tolerance for wilfully damaging school property. Any student who is caught committing, participating, recording, and/or posting videos of the act can receive up to 5 days of out of school suspension as well as being subject to criminal charges and restitution.
We urge you as the parent or guardian to speak with your child about appropriate behavior in social situations, the opportunity to stand for what is right, and taking pride and accountability for our campuses. All Floyd County middle and high schools will offer a $100 cash reward to any student providing information to their administration leading to the arrest, prosecution, and conviction of the offending parties. As always, any source of information will remain completely confidential.
We will continue to monitor social media challenges that may impact the safety of your child and their learning environment. We encourage you as the parent or guardian to do the same.
Thank you for your continued support.
