Model Elementary Fifth Grade Teacher named 2021 Floyd County Schools Teacher of the Year
Dr. Sue Turnquist, a fifth-grade science and social studies teacher at Model Elementary School (MES), has been named the Floyd County Schools (FCS) Teacher of the Year for 2021! She was previously named a district finalist in 2003 and 2017.

16 of FCS' top students were selected to advance in the Governor's Honors Program selection process and will interview at the state level for an opportunity to participate in the program.

Graduation Rate for FCS Class of 2020 Exceeds 94%
FCS' four-year graduation rate for the Class of 2020 of 94.6% ranks FCS as one of the top 35 school systems in the state, according to data released today by the Georgia Department of Education. This rate also exceeds the State’s four-year rate of 83.8%.

Dr. Jennifer Pendergrass named President of GATESOL
FCS' coordinator of ESOL Professional Learning and virtual ESOL teacher at Alto Park Elementary School, Dr. Jennifer Pendergrass has been elected president of GATESOL. GATESOL is a nonprofit organization that supports TESOL professionals, ESOL teachers, their students, and families. GATESOL just held its annual conference, where the election results were announced and her role took effect.Â

Many of our families whose children were enrolled in FCS during the 2019-2020 school year have been receiving P-EBT cards in the mail with their child’s name on them and have expressed concern about their legitimacy.

Today, The Heisman Trophy Trust and Acceptance Insurance announce the 2020 School Winners for the Heisman High School Scholarship presented by Acceptance Insurance. Congratulations to FCS student-athletes Belle Bryant (Model High), Travis Pelfrey (Coosa High), and Madalyn Shell (Coosa High)!

The National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) selected Doss for its 35 Under 35 program, which recognizes young professional members who are making a difference for their school districts or education-related employers every other year. NSPRA describes the class as a group of emerging leaders who are proving that strategic communication is timeless, extending easily to the next generation of school public relations professionals.
