Floyd County Schools (FCS) is proud to announce the appointment of Dena Tracy as the new Principal of Alto Park Elementary School.

A veteran educator with 32 years of experience, Tracy has most recently served as the Assistant Principal at Alto Park, where she has been a driving force in supporting the school’s 400 students and 80 staff members.

Tracy’s ties to the Alto Park community and her proven record of leadership make her the natural choice to lead the school forward. As the current Assistant Principal of The Park, Tracy has been in charge of important programs like school testing, instructional tracking, and public relations, all while fostering a positive school environment for all.

"Mrs. Dena Tracy has already done great things for the Alto Park community as its Assistant Principal," said Dr. Glenn White, Floyd County Schools Superintendent. "Her background in curriculum development and her passion for student achievement are exactly what we look for in a leader. We are excited to see the school continue to thrive under her guidance."

Previously in Tracy’s career, she worked five years as an Assistant Professor of Education at Shorter University and as the K-12 Social Studies Specialist for FCS. She also served 24 years as a classroom teacher, earning the title of Pepperell Elementary School Teacher of the Year in 2002 and reaching the top three finalists for the district-wide honor.

"I am deeply honored to step into this new role at Alto Park Elementary," said Dena Tracy. "Having served this community as Assistant Principal, I have seen firsthand the dedication of our teachers and the potential of our students. I look forward to continuing our work together to ensure every child at Alto Park receives a high-quality education in a supportive and encouraging environment.”

Tracy holds an Educational Specialist degree from Jacksonville State University and just completed her Tier II Certification in Educational Leadership at the University of West Georgia.

Mrs. Tracy will step in to replace Mr. Patrick Hopper, who announced his retirement earlier this month. Mr. Hopper made a tremendous impact on the school community at The Park, and we will truly miss him and his leadership. We wish him the very best retirement!

Two Floyd County Students Named Governor’s Honors State Finalists
Brooke Brumbelow

Floyd County Schools (FCS) is proud to announce that two exceptional students have been named state finalists for the prestigious 2026 Georgia Governor's Honors Program (GHP).

Selected from a highly competitive pool of thousands of applicants across the state, these students have earned a place in the longest-running program of its kind in the nation:

  • Alex Brown, a junior at Armuchee High School, was selected in the area of Mathematics
  • Tobias Swanagan, a sophomore at Model High School, was selected in the area of Mathematics

Finalist selection represents an extraordinary accomplishment, reflecting superior academic ability and an undeniable passion for their field of study.

Both Tobias and Alex have been invited to attend the GHP Summer Program, which runs from June 14 to July 11.

The program offers a residential, educational experience for high-achieving high school sophomores and juniors, providing a mix of academic classes in the morning and afternoon, along with various social and instructional activities in the evenings. Meals and accommodations are included.

The GHP is a four-week summer program that provides intellectually gifted and artistically talented students with challenging and enriching educational opportunities that aren't typically available during the school year. Students choose an area of focus for their major, such as agricultural research, biotechnology, communicative arts, dance, engineering, mathematics, music, science, social studies, theatre, visual arts, or world languages, and also select a minor area to explore outside their major.

Applicants must go through a rigorous selection process, including submitting transcripts, nomination forms, endorsements, and undergoing an interview with a local screening committee. The program also includes seminars, activities, concerts, and performances in the evenings.
