Welcome to Model Elementary School!

  • It is my honor to serve as the principal at Model Elementary.  This is my 22nd year in education all of which have been with Floyd County Schools.  As a graduate of Model High School, I pursued a degree in education from Southeastern University in Florida.  Upon graduation, I taught kindergarten, first grade, second grade, third grade, fourth grade, and fifth grade in multi-age settings at Cave Spring Elementary School from 1997 until 2001.

I transferred to my home district, the Model area, in 2001 where I taught both 4th and 5th grades at Johnson Elementary School from 2001 - 2008.  During my time as a classroom teacher at Johnson Elementary School, I was honored to be announced as a Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year, Johnson Elementary School Teacher of the Year, and Floyd County Schools District-Wide Distinguished Employee of the Year.

After earning my Masters degree in Curriculum and Supervision from Kennesaw State University, I became the assistant principal for Pepperell Primary School from 2008-2013 where I served the Lindale community. During my tenure at Pepperell Primary, I earned my Specialist Degree in Curriculum and Supervision.

From 2013 - 2015, I served as the assistant principal at both Johnson Elementary School and Model Elementary Schools.  At the beginning of the 2015 - 2016 school year, I was named the principal at Model Elementary School where the community phrase, "We Are Model," was birthed from a collaborative movement within our community.

Our vision at Model Elementary School is:  We Are Model.  We are passionate about fostering relationships, community, character, and academic excellence.

We serve pre-kindergarten through fifth grade students, students with disabilities including two classes with highly-qualified and specially trained teachers who serve the needs of students with autism.  We have two certified speech language pathologists, gifted student services, and offer an excellent EnCore deparment featuring art/STEAM, music (chorus, recorders, musical performances), and physical education as well as an after school program.  Our newly redesigned media center provides our students with access to Lexiled-leveled books, collaborative technology, and access to 3-D printing.

If you are currently a Model family, thank you for choosing to call Model your home.  If you are looking for a school whose focus is about fostering relationships, community, character, and excellence, then we invite you to become a part of our Model Family.  Once at Model Elementary, you will be inducted into one of our four houses based on the British house system and the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta, Georgia.  Our four houses, Ari, Kenji, Nia, and Pilar, are associated with our positive behavior support program.  Every Wednesday is House Day at MES.  Students and staff are encouraged to wear "house colors" to show their house spirit.  We also use the Pupil Rewards recognition technology component to reward and track students' house points.  We are the first school in the United States to adopt the Pupil Rewards program. In addition to positive behavior recognition, we also provide a very safe and secure dismissal process using the Silent Dismissal platform.

We teach the Georgia Standards of Excellence at Model Elementary under the guidance of a highly-qualified and passionate staff.  Teachers continually use differentiated strategies to support the needs of all students.  We are a Google Education School, use Google Classroom, and provide 1:1 Chromebook ratio for all students in grade 1-5 and 1:2 Chromebook ratio in kindergarten.

At Model Elementary School, the Georgia Standards of Excellence are taught through the Eureka:  A Story of Units math curriculum, Wonders Reading and Units of Study by Lucy Calkins writing curriculum, and literacy integrated science and social studies.  Students' learning needs are meet through the Georgia Pyramid of Instruction/Intervention four tier process under the guidance of our assistant principal, Mr. Kyle Abernathy:  Tier 1) Core Instruction, Tier 2) Skill-based grade level supportive instruction, Tier 3) Student Support Team intensive instruction driven through team developed intervention plans, and Tier 4 specialized instruction based on students' Individualized Education Plans developed through special education.

Model Elementary School is a safe, welcoming school with high expectations for our community, character, and excellence.  We believe we have the Best Students, Best Teachers, and Best School!  Welcome to Model!
