The purpose of the procedure called "SCRIP" is to gather information on road conditions when inclement weather is forecasted for the Rome area. The "SCRIP" plan will provide the needed information for the superintendent to decide if schools should be closed due to weather conditions. The "SCRIP" plan includes the following provisions:
  • The superintendent, or assistant superintendent in the absence of the superintendent, will initiate the activation of the "SCRIP" plan when bad weather has been forecasted for the area.
  • Designated Floyd County Schools transportation department employees will check road conditions in assigned areas and report their findings to the director of transportation. The reporters are to give a "yes" or "no" recommendation regarding travel in their assigned area by 5:45 a.m.
  • The transportation director will gather information from area reporters, local law enforcement, and emergency 911 personnel. The transportation director will then report a "yes" or "no" recommendation for schools opening for the day.
  • The superintendent will make a decision about the school day status based on the information provided by the transportation director. The decision will be made public by 6:00 a.m.
  • The superintendent or the director of public relations will inform the news media of the decision regarding school status as soon as the superintendent makes a final decision.
  • If the decision is made to close schools, a message will be placed on the school system's telephone system that will automatically play for anyone calling Floyd County Schools at
    (706) 234-1031. A listing will also be placed on the system's website at www.floydboe.net.
These procedures and timelines will allow the school system to inform parents, employees, and the community in a timely manner when it is necessary to close schools due to weather conditions. The community is urged to utilize the services of the local media, the system telephone system, and the school system website to get information regarding school closings.
