Purpose:

The SPICE (Self Paced Interactive Curriculum Education) program is designed to provide students who have dropped out or failed a Tech Prep class an opportunity to complete courses toward earning a diploma. The SPICE lab is a different setting and supports students who have been unsuccessful in a core course by providing the option to retake the course.

Goals:

The SPICE activities address the following goals:

  • An increase in the number of students meeting entrance requirements for career technical schools and the military.
  • A reduction in students staying out of the educational arena for extended periods.
  • An increase in basic, lifetime skills of learning.
  • A continuous exploration of career interest through studies and an increase in job options.

History:

The Floyd County SPICE program began in September 1998, in response to a concern to serve students who do not fit the traditional high school student's characteristics for various reasons. The high school setting was inappropriate for this non-traditional population to work toward obtaining a high school diploma. The Floyd County Board of Education also wanted to assist regular high school students who had failed a course by providing a setting where the students could earn the credit needed.

Enrollment Requirements:

  • Students over 16 years of age who have dropped out of regular high school.
  • Fifth year students who do not return to school by September.
  • Students willing to take the Georgia High School Graduation Test to get a diploma Students who have earned a minimum of 15 Carnegie units of credit.
  • Other students with special circumstances referred by the school counselor or principal may be considered only after communication with the Assistant Superintendent of Instruction.
  • A fee of $150 per unit will be assessed to students participating in the program unless the students qualifies for QBE state funding.

All students are required to bring appropriate information from the home school with the signature of the principal and the counselor to actually begin classes.

How does it Work?

  • Teachers have prepared a notebook for each course to be used with computer lessons and other assigned course activity based on one Carnegie unit. This means the student will complete 150 clock-hours of instruction.
  • Only one course can be scheduled at a time per student. Upon completion of one course another course may be taken.
  • The lab center will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Other hours can be arranged by contacting: Peggy Lamneck at the Floyd Technical High School at (706) 236-1860.
  • Students will be able to sign up for extra hours when all student spaces are not taken.
  • A facilitator will be in the lab center to assist with any questions about course materials and application.
