| Floyd County Schools has three paths of study available leading to a high school diploma. A student entering the ninth grade must decide between the College Preparatory Diploma, the Honors College Prep Diploma and the Vocational/Technical Preparatory Diploma. All students must pass the Georgia High School Graduation Test to receive a high school diploma.
The Honors College Prep Diploma program is designed to prepare students for the most demanding college or university work. Students will graduate with a locally developed Honors College Prep seal if they have earned a minimum of 15 HCP credits concentrated in at least three content areas. A content area concentration equals three units. Additionally, a student must have earned at least three HCP credits each year in grades 9-12. A student completing the program will be guaranteed ready for college. Students have to meet program criteria and have parental approval to enroll in the Honors College Prep Program.
The College Preparatory Diploma is
a program of study designed to prepare students to enter
a college or university. Advanced placement courses are
recommended. The College Prep program
provides students with the advanced thinking and study
skills necessary for success in the rigorous academic programs
of colleges and universities. A College
Prep "With Distinction" seal is available for students
taking two additional core academic courses as electives
and attaining GPA of 3.0 or above in core courses or 80
or above using a cumulative average. Advanced Placement
courses, which can earn college credit, are available.
The Vocational/Technical
Preparatory Diploma is a program designed to
prepare students to enter a post secondary vocational
technical school or the work force. Students are encouraged
to take electives in their vocational concentration. Technical
Career Prep prepares students for a career by
opening doors to post-secondary programs or the job
market. Students may be eligible to attend a technical
institute during their senior year and receive credit
for both high school and tech school courses. A Tech
Prep seal is available for students taking additional
academic courses. Technical
Career Prep "With Distinction" can be earned
by taking one additional core course as an elective
and attaining a GPA of 3.0 or above in core courses
or 80 or above using a cumulative average.
The Dual Endorsement Program is a program of study leading to two diploma seals. Students completing the requirements of both College Prep and Technical Career Prep are awarded seals for both diploma types. This is a very demanding program and is a special achievement.
Unit Requirements The College Prep Diploma
This program of study is designed to prepare students to enter a college or university. To earn this diploma, a student must receive 28 units (32 units possible). One unit equals one semester of study.
Students must earn:
- four units of English
- four units of math
- three units of science
- three units of social studies
- two units of foreign language (units must be the same language)
- one unit of computer technology
- one unit of health and physical education
The remaining 10 credits are used for elective courses. Advanced placement courses are recommended.
Technical Career Prep Diploma
This program is designed to prepare students to enter a post secondary vocational technical school or the work force. To earn this diploma, a student must receive 28 units (32 possible). One unit equals one semester of study.
Students must earn:
- four units of English
- four units of math (student must earn the equivalent of one year of Algebra)
- three units of science
- three units of social studies
- one unit of health and physical education
- four units of vocational/technical concentration (three units must be in the same area: business management, engineering, and health & human services)
- one unit of computer technology, fine arts, vocational education, or foreign language
The remaining 8 credits are used for elective courses. Students are encouraged to take electives in their vocational concentration.
