The week of March 13-17, 2017, has been proclaimed School Board Appreciation Week in Georgia. The observance calls attention to the contributions of local boards of education to the children and the community. “Citizens elect board members to represent the community’s voice in preparing our children to reach graduation and success beyond receiving a diploma,” said Dr. John Jackson, superintendent of Floyd County Schools. “Our excellent board spends countless hours working together with our Local School Governance Teams in the Charter System governance format to continually improve our schools and provide the best possible opportunities for children.”

The men and women serving Floyd County Schools are: Chip Hood, chairman, who represents the Armuchee and Glenwood communities; Dr. Tony Daniel, vice chairman, serving the Pepperell community; Melinda Jeffers representing the Cave Spring and McHenry communities; Jay Shell serving the Coosa community; and Dr. Melinda Strickland representing the Model and Johnson communities.

These men and women have job obligations, family responsibilities, and community duties but they still are willing to commit the time necessary to provide the best possible opportunities for children in Floyd County. They also perform their duties at the highest level as the Floyd County Board of Education is recognized as an Exemplary School Board by the Georgia School Boards Association.  Exemplary is the highest level of recognition for a local board of education in the state.

As constitutional officers of Georgia, school board members are responsible for setting educational policies, employing school personnel, providing buildings and equipment, operating a transportation system and disbursing school funds. As community leaders, school board members serve as advocates for the children in local public schools and must study, evaluate and decide what actions are in the best interest of those children.

The Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA) sponsors the celebration of School Board Appreciation Week in Georgia. The mission of GSBA is to ensure excellence in the governance of local school systems by providing leadership, advocacy and services, and by representing the collective resolve of Georgia’s elected boards of education.
