The process to select a new board member to represent the Coosa community was approved by the Floyd County Board of Education at the board’s work session held on Thursday, January 8. The board will open the process for community applications to secure candidates for board consideration. Applications are available on the system’s website and will be taken through noon on Thursday, January 15. “We want this to be a very transparent process,” commented George Bevels, board chairman. “We want to keep the community informed and as a Georgia Charter System we want to include members of the Local Governance Teams from the Coosa area in the selection process.”
The selection of a new board member became necessary when Brian Barcomb resigned from the board after his family recently relocated their residence outside of the Coosa community. Board members are required to live in the district they represent. “Mr. Barcomb has been a valuable member of the Floyd County Board of Education representing the Coosa community and we are going to miss his dedication to children,” stated Dr. Jeff McDaniel, superintendent of Floyd County Schools. “Our school system has made tremendous strides during Brian’s tenure on the board and we look forward to finding someone from the Coosa community who will continue the tradition of strong board participation that has helped our board to be among the best in the state.” The Floyd County Board of Education was recently recognized as a “Distinguished Board” by the Georgia School Boards Association.
The application, for those in the Coosa community interested in fulfilling the term of Brian Barcomb, is available on the school system’s website at Application for Coosa Board Seat on the website homepage. Barcomb’s term runs through December 31, 2016. Applications will be accepted in the Board of Education office on Riverside Parkway until noon on Thursday, January 15. Completed applications with resumes must be turned in by the deadline to be considered. The applicant must live in the Coosa community (District 3) which serves Coosa High. Coosa community residents who live in the Cave Spring Elementary attendance zone would not be eligible. Cave Spring is in Board District 5 while also in the Coosa High attendance area.
The board will involve an administrator and a parent from the Coosa community’s Local School Governance Teams to review the applications and work with the board to select finalists for the board seat. A school administrator serving on a Coosa area school LSGT, along with a parent serving on one of the Coosa area LSGT groups, will participate in the process to select finalists to be interviewed for the open seat on the board.
The board will interview the selected finalists to fill the vacancy the last week of January. The board will vote to select the individual to be appointed to fulfill the term of Brian Barcomb at the board’s scheduled meeting on Tuesday, February 3. The selected individual could then begin service on the board by the March Board of Education meeting to be held on Tuesday, March 3 at 6 p.m.
