William Dean Merriweather, a senior at Pepperell High School, has been selected to become a member of the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS).  The Society recognizes top scholars who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, scholarship, and community commitment.

Merriweather has been involved in advanced academics, club life and extra-curricular sports at Pepperell High School.  He is in the National Honor Society, a huddle leader in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Student Council historian, and in the Future Business Leaders of America.  He has played on the football team, the basketball team and was a part of the first PHS soccer team last season.  Merriweather won the Varsity Basketball Coach’s Award for 2011-2012 and the Freshman Basketball Student Athlete Award for 2010-2011.

Merriweather plans to attend the University of Notre Dame, Harvard or Princeton and pursue a career in biomedical engineering.  He also hopes to pursue sports in college in basketball or soccer.

Outside of his school pursuits, Merriweather is associate minister at LoveJoy Baptist Church.  “I do not allow my situation to determine who I am or where I want to be in live,” Merriweather said. “I am determined to live my life to the fullest and be all that I can, through whatever adversity may come my way.”

The announcement was made by NSHSS founder and Chairman Claes Nobel, a senior member of the family that established the Nobel Prizes.  “On behalf of HSHSS, I am honored to recognize the hard work, sacrifice, and commitment that William demonstrated to achieve this exceptional level of academic excellence,” said Nobel. “William is now a member of a unique community of scholars – a community that represents our very best hope for the future.”

Membership in HSHSS entitles qualified students to enjoy a wide variety of benefits, including scholarship opportunities, academic competitions, free events, member-only resources, publications, participation in programs offered by educational partners, personalized recognition items, and publicity honors.

The National Society of High School Scholars recognizes academic excellence at the high school level and encourages members of the organization to apply their unique talents, vision, and potential for the betterment of themselves and the world.  Currently, there are more than 830,000 society members in over 160 countries.  NSHSS provides scholarship opportunities for deserving young people.
