2009 Governor’s Cup
Armuchee High wins Governor’s Cup SAT Region Title
Posted on 10/27/2009
Armuchee High School has earned recognition from The Governor's Cup Challenge for SAT success as the 7-AA Region Champion in the academic competition. Armuchee High finished third in the state championship for the 2009 AA Governor’s Cup and was named the Top Scorer in the AA classification. AHS was also one of only two AA qualifiers to have an SAT score higher than the national average.

The Governor's Cup Challenge calculates average three-year gains made by schools on their most recent SAT in both the critical reading and math sections. Three years worth of scores are used to promote on-going improvement in student performance on the SAT. It is significant that Armuchee High was one of a select few schools to be honored with SAT scores higher than the national average because statistics show it is much more difficult to significantly raise test scores when your scores are already at a high level.

Armuchee High School will receive a $1,000 grant check and a trophy for being named the region champion and a plaque recognizing AHS as the highest scoring school in Class AA. The $1,000 is to be used to continue SAT improvement efforts at Armuchee High. “We stress to our students the importance of challenging themselves for success in life or a test like the SAT,” stated Dr J. C. Burris, principal at Armuchee High. “Our students have accepted the challenge by taking more demanding courses from Advanced Placement to our Honors Prep track.” Armuchee will use part of the $1,000 award to fund an online test preparation program.

The Governor’s Cup Challenge is organized by Georgia High School Association (GHSA) class and region assignments to allow schools to be compared against similarly sized schools within the same region of the state. The GHSA divides schools into five classes (A, AA, AAA, AAAA, and AAAAA) with each class having eight regions. Within each GHSA region of each class, the school that has the greatest average gain in the most recent total SAT score for critical reading plus math over the previous three years will be selected as a regional winner. Regional winners of each class are then compared against one another by their average SAT gains to determine five class winners.

Floyd County Schools has been a regular in the SAT winners circle since the inception of the Governor’s Cup in 2004. Coosa High won a region title in 2007 and a AA state title in 2004; Model High was named the AA state champion in 2008.

All region winners and their scores can be seen on the web site SATRocks.com, the official website of Governor Sonny Perdue's Governor's Cup Challenge to Georgia high schools to improve SAT* scores.
