Three teachers have been selected as finalists for the 2011 Teacher of the Year recognition program for Floyd County Schools. The three finalists are: Dr. Amy Tilley-Allee, a grade 6-12 teacher at the Floyd County Education Center; Deanna L. Hackney, an eighth-grade teacher at Coosa Middle School; and Michelle Plemons Sanders, a third-grade teacher at Garden Lakes Elementary School.

Dr. Amy Tilley-Allee teaches 6-12 grade science at the Floyd County Education Center. She has been a teacher since 1991 and has taught at the FCEC since 1998. Dr. Allee started her career at St. Mary’s Catholic School in 1991 and has been an adjunct instructor at Shorter University since 2007. Dr. Allee is a graduate of Shorter University, holds an educational leadership masters degree from Jacksonville State University and holds a doctorate degree from Nova Southeastern University. This is her second time to be selected for the finals in the Teacher of the Year program for Floyd County Schools as Dr. Allee was also a finalist in 2003.

Deanna L. Hackney teaches eighth-grade physical science at Coosa Middle School. She started her career in 1991 teaching kindergarten and second grade at East Central Elementary. Mrs. Hackey also taught at Pepperell Elementary and West Central Elementary before she came to Coosa Middle School in 2007. Mrs. Hackney is a graduate of Berry College and holds a masters degree from Kennesaw State University. This is also her second selection as a finalist in the Teacher of the Year recognition program. Mrs Hackney was selected in 2001 while teaching at Pepperell Elementary.

Michelle Plemons Sanders is a third-grade teacher at Garden Lakes Elementary. She started her career at Garden Lakes in 2008. Mrs. Sanders is a graduate of the University of West Georgia with an undergraduate and a master degree. She also holds an art degree from Georgia Highlands College.

The finalists were selected by a review committee from the Georgia Teacher of the Year Association. This is an association made up of former Georgia Teachers of the Year. The committee made the selections from written applications submitted by the "Teacher of the Year" representatives from each school in the Floyd County School System. Questions asked in the application were taken from the Georgia "Teacher of the Year" application form.

The three top teachers will now begin the final phase of the selection process to select the 2011 Floyd County Schools "Teacher of the Year." The process will include a personal interview of each finalist and classroom observations of the teachers working with students. The interviews will be held on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at the Floyd County Board of Education Office on Riverside Parkway. The selection will conclude on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 with classroom observations. The selection process will be evaluated by a committee made up of members of the Floyd/Rome Retired Teachers Association.

The 2011 Floyd County Schools "Teacher of the Year" will be announced on November 8, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. during the regular monthly meeting of the Floyd County Board of Education. The Floyd County Teacher of the Year program is sponsored by the Northwest Georgia Credit Union.
