Posted on 01/20/2011
The Pepperell High Academic Decathlon team has won the Floyd County Schools Academic Decathlon competition for 2011. The annual competition was held at the Board of Education central office on Tuesday, January 18, 2011. Pepperell made a strong push for the title last year but finished second to perennial winner Coosa High. This year, the Pepperell team broke through into the winners circle by holding off a strong Coosa High challenge. Coosa High had enjoyed an eight year run as system champion. Pepperell finished the day with 16,755 total points, Coosa High finished second with a total of 16,195 and Armuchee came in third with 15,290. Pepperell High will now represent Floyd County Schools in the state competition in February. The Pepperell High team was led by coach Tim Gillespie.

The Academic Decathlon features three divisions of competition: Honors, Scholastic and Varsity. The academic contest features competitions in: language and literature, math, economics, social science, music, and art. The competition also features a Super Quiz with written and oral contests.
