Jaida Lovelace, a seventh grader at Pepperell Middle School, was the top speller in the Floyd County School system’s annual Spelling Bee, held on Monday, February 7, 2011, at 9:00 a.m. at the Floyd County Board of Education office on Riverside Parkway . Lovelace and 9 other individual school spelling champions, from schools with grades 4-8, participated in the Floyd County Schools Spelling Bee. Joseph Lancaster, from Model Middle School, was the runner-up in the competition.

The two finalist traded disappointment at misspelling a word during the finals before Lovelace spelled the required two words in a row to win the competition. She slowly spelled the word “magnificently” to give her a shot at the winning word. Lovelace then finished off the competition by confidently spelling “toxicosis” to win the spelling bee.

Lovelace put in a lot of study time to get ready to compete in the academic spell-off. In fact, when the spellers introduced themselves to the audience they were asked to tell one thing they had done during their time off from school last week for Winter Intersession. Lovelace said, “I studied all during Intersession last week.” When questioned about her study methods Lovelace said,” I would practice by writing the words and those that I missed I would write ten times.”

For her first place finish, Jaida Lovelace received a plaque and certificate recognizing her accomplishment. The seventh-grader will represent Floyd County Schools in the District Spelling Bee on Saturday, February 26 at the Floyd County Board of Education office. Joseph Lancaster will serve as an alternate at the District Bee. The district competition will begin at 10:00 a.m. and will feature the top spellers in District One.

School spelling champions participating in the Floyd County Spelling Bee were: Alto Park Elementary, Kaitlin Bostick; Armuchee Middle, Brody Everett; Cave Spring Elementary, Zac Mitchell; Coosa Middle, Renee Cardona; Garden Lakes Elementary, Chloe Bradfield; Johnson Elementary, Liam Knowles; Model Elementary, Jackson Lively; Model Middle, Joseph Lancaster; Pepperell Elementary, Robert Leachman; Pepperell Middle, Jaida Lovelace. Armuchee Elementary spelling champion, Averi Moore, did not participate in the system competition.
