Jared Van Curen, a senior at Coosa High, has been selected as the 2011 STAR Student for Coosa. The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) award, sponsored by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce; the Georgia Department of Education and the Professional Association of Georgia Educators, is presented to a high school senior with the school’s highest SAT score and ranking in the top ten percent or top ten members of the school’s senior class. Each STAR student selects a STAR Teacher in the recognition program. Van Curen selected Coosa High American literature teacher Eric Johansen as his STAR Teacher.

Van Curen has been a standout student and athlete at Coosa High. He was recently named a semifinalist for the 2011 class of the Coca-Cola Scholars program, a 2010 AP Scholar by the College Board, and he received the 2010 NAIA Champion of Character High School Athlete Award. Van Curen is a member of the CHS Academic Decathlon team, and he participated in the Governor’s Honors program in 2009. Van Curen recently accepted an appointment to the United States Military Academy.

The Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce will recognize STAR reciepients at all area high schools in the next few weeks. The individual high school winners will then join Van Curen in the selection process for the STAR Student of Floyd County Schools. System winners will then move on to the district competition.
