Hope Bettler, a senior at Armuchee High, has been selected as the 2011 STAR Student for Armuchee. The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) award, sponsored by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce; the Georgia Department of Education and the Professional Association of Georgia Educators, is presented to a high school senior with the school’s highest SAT score and ranking in the top ten percent or top ten members of the school’s senior class. Each STAR student selects a STAR Teacher in the recognition program. Bettler selected Leigha Burnham, a former Armuchee High teacher as her STAR Teacher.

Bettler has been a standout student at Armuchee High. She has also won honors for her spelling ability at the system and district level. She won the Floyd County Schools Spelling Bee in 2007 and 2005. She was runner-up at the District Spelling Bee in 2007.

The Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce is recognizing STAR recipients at all area high schools in the next few weeks. The individual high school winners will then be in the running for the STAR Student of Floyd County Schools. The system winner will be selected on March 11, 2011. System winners will then move on to the district competition.
