Mary Heida, a senior at Model High, has been selected as the 2011 STAR Student for Model. The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) award, sponsored by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce; the Georgia Department of Education and the Professional Association of Georgia Educators, is presented to a high school senior with the school’s highest SAT score and ranking in the top ten percent or top ten members of the school’s senior class. Each STAR student selects a STAR Teacher in the recognition program. Heida selected Jennifer Greer, a math teacher at Model High, as her STAR Teacher.

Heida has been a model student during her academic career. She has maintained a 4.0 grade point average in high school and will be the Model High 2011 valedictorian. She is also president of Model’s National Honor Society. Heida was recognized as a seventh-grader by the Duke University Talent Identification Program for exceptional scores on the ACT or SAT. As an eighth-grader, she was named to the District Honor Band. Heida is also active outside the classroom. She teaches gymnastics at the Senior Adult Recreation Center and is a student of dance.

The Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce is recognizing STAR recipients at all area high schools in the next few weeks. The individual high school winners will then be in the running for the STAR Student of Floyd County Schools. The system winner will be selected on March 11, 2011. System winners will then move on to the district competition.
