The Pepperell High School Academic Decathlon team finished second in the state in the Super Quiz Oral Relay at the 2011 Page Georgia Academic Decathlon. The competition was the 25th anniversary showdown between the Georgia’s top academic teams held on February 25 and 26, 2011, at Berkmar High School in Gwinnett County.

The Super Quiz Relay is one of the most exciting competitions in the two day academic contest and is held on Saturday afternoon. During the relay, team members compete in a quiz bowl format. The students vie to be the first to buzz-in answers pertaining to the year’s theme, “An Introduction to Geology.”

More than 170 high school students from 21 high schools, representing 15 school districts, competed in the academic event. During the competition, students were tested in seven content areas: economics, art, language and literature, mathematics, social science, music and Written Super Quiz. In addition, students earned points individually in three communication events: public speaking, a personal interview and a written essay. The program is unique because each nine-member team is made up of three “A” students, three “B” students and three “C” students. Each year the program features a different overall curriculum topic.

In individual honors, Pepperell team members collected for medals. Haley Pendleton won a Silver Medal in Economics, a Silver Medal in the Essay competition, and a Bronze Medal in Overall Individual High Score for her division. Tyler Compton won a Gold Medal in the Essay competition for his division. PAGE, PAGE Foundation, Apple, the Georgia Department of Education and Oglethorpe Power sponsor the Academic Decathlon.
