An Armuchee Elementary student team participating in the Region Odyssey of the Mind competition placed third and will advance to state competition. The placing Armuchee team, Le’ Tour Guide, included students; Peyton Christen, Levi Hammond, Samuel Traylor, Josiah Hammond and Taylor Brock. Odyssey of the Mind competitions allows students to participate in groups to fully explore their creativity and enhance their ability to work as a team to solve complex problems.

The Le’ Tour Guide group was asked to take a character from classic literature and make them a tour guide. The tour guide had to take the group on a tour. They had to create a useless item that had to be guarded by one of the characters and had to give an inaccurate explanation and an accurate explanation of some part of their tour. The AES group selected the Wicked Witch of the West (played by Peyton Christen) as their classic character and began their tour in the Land of Odd. They then met up with the Tin Man (Levi Hammond), Dorothy (Samuel Traylor), the Scarecrow (Josiah Hammond) and the Cowardly Lion (Taylor Brock). The Tin Man was guarding a useless compass that only pointed south. The tour takes the characters to Horse Thief Canyon in Kansas and Rock Creek State park also in Kansas. The Wicked Witch of the West explained that her record breaking twister caused the canyon, while the Scarecrow (who has no brain) gives the accurate explanation of erosion. The students did all the research for the play, wrote the play and made all the props and costumes by themselves. No adult assistance is allowed in the competition except as advisors and coaches

AES took three teams to the regional competition. Members of the team Full Circle Group included: Emmie Phillips, Laken Burdick, Elisabeth Ashton, MacKenzie Fisher, and Madison Bartlett. The members of the Extreme Mousemobile team were: Christopher Dean, Olivia Vardy, Emily Cady, Brooke Dellis, Kenta Davis, and Marrio Oliver.

The Le’ Tour Guide will now advance to the State Competition in Columbus, Georgia on April 16th. Winners at the state level advance to the World Finals to be held during the month of May in Maryland. This is the second year that Armuchee Elementary has participated in the Odyssey of the Mind program.
