Toby Armellino, a senior at Coosa High School, was the state runner-up in extemporaneous speaking at the State Literary Meet held in March at Veteran's High School in Warner-Robins, Georgia. Armellino received a medal for his placement at the state academic competition. At the Literary Meet, students competed in various individual and group events. In the category of extemporaneous speaking; individual students had to draw three topics on current events and select one to speak about in the competition. The students then had thirty minutes to prepare a presentation and speak on the chosen topic in front of two judges. The time limit for each presentation was seven minutes. The students could have no more than a single note card on which to write notes and facts.

To qualify to compete at the state level, Armellino won first place in the Region 7-AA Literary Meet also held in March. The region competition was held in Calhoun. Armellino also received a medal for his first place finish in the region.
