CHS seniors receive Congressional appointments to military academies

Two Coosa High School seniors, Jared Van Curen and Brian Evan Wasdin, have received prestigious Congressional appointments to United States military academies. Van Curen has received an appointment from Senator Saxby Chambliss and Representative Phil Gingrey to the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. and Wasdin has received an appointment from Representative Phil Gingrey to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD.

While at Coosa, Van Curen has been involved in Eagle Senate, Junior Optimist International, Coosa Literary Arts Society, Math Team, Quiz Bowl, Mock Trial and Academic Decathlon as well as playing varsity soccer and football. He was Coosa High’s STAR student, a semifinalist for the 2011 class of the Coca-Cola Scholars program, a 2010 AP Scholar and he received the 2010 NAIA Champion of Character High School Athlete Award. Van Curen has also been involved with the Coosa River Basin Initiative.

Wasdin has been active at Coosa High in Eagle Senate, Junior Optimist International, Coosa Literary Arts Society, High School Leadership Rome, Math Team, and Academic Decathlon as well as playing varsity tennis. Wasdin has also been involved with the Civil Air Patrol, receiving the rank of Chief Master Sergeant and with the Boy Scouts of America where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout.

Mr. Trevor Hubbard, principal of Coosa High School, commended the two young men for their contribution to Coosa High and the Coosa community. Hubbard said “Jared and Brian are two of the most outstanding young men I have encountered and I am confident that they will be an asset to their chosen Academy and to our country.”
