Sandy Abbasi, a volunteer at Midway Primary School, was named the 2011 Floyd County Schools Volunteer of the Year for her work with children at Midway. The award was presented at the April meeting of the Floyd County Board of Education held on Tuesday, April 5. Abbasi was nominated for the award by the staff at Midway.

Abbasi was described as a true blessing to the students and teachers at Midway in her nomination. She volunteers every Tuesday and Thursday to help students struggling in an academic area. Abbasi works with students for 45 minutes in the areas of phonics, reading and math during her volunteer time. The teachers at Midway understand that Sandi Abbasi offers help with much more than just school work. “She gives children unconditional love and brings other items they may need like clothes, shoes, or food,” teachers wrote in the nomination. Abbasi also made sure that all of the students she works with had toys at Christmas time.

Abbasi also supports her students at school activities. If a child’s parents are unable to attend a school event, Abbasi will attend the special event or activity to support the child. “Her student’s faces light up when they see her walk in the building,” one teacher wrote in the nomination. “Sandy Abbasi is making a difference.”
