Results on the 2011 Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) for Floyd County children are up in almost every grade and content area. This continues the trend of solid academic performance on the test that measures student mastery of academic content in Georgia’s curriculum.

The official statewide results of the CRCT were released today and show a one-year improvement on 19 of the 30 content-area tests. There was no one-year change on two tests. The few subject areas with decreases were concentrated in the areas of science and social studies.

“It is encouraging that our children continue to perform well on the CRCT,” said Superintendent Dr. Lynn Plunkett. “Our Intersessions, that provide additional instructional time for students, were particularly valuable this year in helping students struggling with a subject to display mastery of the material even though class time was missed due to budget cuts and the weather problems of snow and tornadoes.”

Reading and Language Arts were strength areas for Floyd students with all grade levels achieving above the 90 percent level of meeting or exceeding the standard. All grade levels exceeded the state in both the Reading and English Language Arts sections of the tests. Scores also increased over last year’s system scores in five of the six grade levels on the math portion of the tests.

Even before the CRCT results were announced, the school system was already working with teachers and the community to plan instructional enhancements to move student’s academic performance to an even higher level. Tim Hensley, assistant to the superintendent said, “As a Georgia Charter System, we will use our test data to involve our students, teachers, parents and community, through the Local School Governance Teams, to plan school improvement efforts for next year as we focus on the academic achievement of our children.”

State law requires that students in third, fifth and eighth grade meet or exceed expectations on the CRCT in reading in order to be promoted. Fifth and eighth grade students must also meet or exceed expectations on the CRCT in mathematics.   The state did not test students in first and second grade this school year.
