Gina Yu, a senior at Armuchee High School, is one of 16,000 students nationwide to be named Semifinalists in the 57th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Yu will now have the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,300 scholarship awards, worth more than $34 million, that will be offered this spring. About 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and approximately half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.

Gina Yu has a grade point average of 4.0 at Armuchee High. She has been chapter president of the AHS FBLA; president, vice-president, and secretary of Student Council; a member of the National Honor Society; an AP Scholar with Honor and she participated in the Governor’s Honors Program. Yu has also been very active in extra-curricular activities. She lettered in cross country. She plays violin and has been a member of the Oak Hill Symphony, Buckhead Youth Orchestra and the Georgia All-state Orchestra. Ms. Yu has also been an active volunteer in the community. She took a mission trip to Puerto Rico and worked with handicapped patients at a facility in the country, she has prepared meals for patients at Mercy Senior Center and she has volunteered for the March of Dimes.

More than 1.5 million juniors in nearly 22,000 U.S. high schools entered the 2012 National Merit Program by taking the 2010 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state.

To become a finalist, a semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout the high school years, be endorsed and recommended by the school principal, and earn an SAT score that confirms the student’s earlier qualifying test performance. The student must also submit a self-descriptive essay and information about participation and leadership in school and community activities.

Semifinalists will be notified in February, if they advance to the Finalist level. All National Merit Scholarship winners will be selected from the Finalist group.
