The Armuchee High School Academic Decathlon team placed fourth in Division II at the state Academic Decathlon held this past weekend. Four Armuchee High students earned individual medals in the two day academic competition sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators and held on Friday and Saturday at Berkmar High School in Gwinnett County. Haley Patterson, a sophomore at Armuchee, won two individual bronze medals. One in interview and another in the category of interview overall. Mark Kim, a senior, won a bronze medal in mathematics; Austin Bryant, a senior, a bronze in art; and Augusta Hosmer, a junior, a bronze in music.

More than 170 high school students from 20 high schools, representing 13 school districts, competed in the academic event. The schools are split into two divisions with Division I for large schools with 1,300 or more students and Division II for small schools with 1,299 or less students. The team placements are based on division but individual scores in categories include all students in both divisions. During the competition, students were tested in seven content areas: economics, art, language and literature, mathematics, science, music and Written Super Quiz. In addition, students earned points individually in three communication events: public speaking, a personal interview and a written essay. Each nine-member team is made up of three "A" or Honor students; three "B" or Scholastic students; and three "C" or Varsity students. Each year the program features a different overall curriculum topic. This year’s topic was, “The Age of Empire.” On Saturday afternoon, students participated in the exciting Super Quiz Oral Relay. During the relay, team members competed in a quiz bowl format, keying in answers to questions. This year’s topic for the Super Quiz was, “The Age of Imperialism.

The team members from Armuchee High School included: Bennett Garland, Augusta Hosmer, and Haley Patterson in the Honors division; Katherine Clonts, Austin Bryant, and Mark Kim in the Scholastic division; Jenny Hudgins, Sania Rizwan, and Hayden Childre in the Varsity division. Alternates included: Elizabeth Clonts, and Sanjid Dewan in Honors; Natalie Shoemaker in Scholastic; and Fatima Rizwan in Varsity. Team members not able to attend the state meet but participated in the Floyd County Academic Decathlon were: Airius Hudgins, Rachel Garland and Taylor Critchlow. The Armuchee High team was led by coach Lisa Childress.

Armuchee High won the Floyd County Academic Decathlon last month to earn the opportunity to represent Floyd County Schools in the competition. Coosa High School also competed in the state event as a Wild Card. The Wild Card teams are selected based on high scores of second place teams in system competitions.
