Alex Cantrell, a senior at Model High, has been selected as the school's STAR student for 2012. The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) award, sponsored by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce; the Georgia Department of Education and the Professional Association of Georgia Educators, is presented to a high school senior with the school’s highest SAT score and ranking in the top ten percent or top ten members of the school’s senior class. Each STAR student selects a STAR Teacher in the recognition program. Cantrell chose Mrs. Sheila Wood, a teacher at Johnson Elementary, as her STAR Teacher.

Cantrell is a student in the Honors Prep program at Model High for 2012 with a perfect 4.0 GPA. She has taken 19 Honors or Advanced Placement courses in her high school career. Cantrell has been a member of the National Honors Society during her sophomore, junior and senior years.

Cantrell's selection for STAR teacher was a bit out of the ordinary as she selected one of her elementary school teachers. Cantrell said, "Mrs. Wood not only had a positive impact on my academic life but she also helped shape my character and who I am as a person." Cantrell plans to attend University of Georgia in the fall and major in law or politics.
