Floyd Medical Center received the 2012 Work-based Learning Partnership of the Year Award at the April Floyd County Board of Education meeting held on Tuesday, April 3. Floyd Medical Center was one of the two original business partners working with Floyd County Schools when the original Youth Apprenticeship Grant was implemented in 1995. Since 1995, Floyd Medical Center has worked with Floyd County Schools to provide approximately 195 students from the Healthcare Science Program with both internship and apprenticeship opportunities. Many of these students are now gainfully employed healthcare professionals at Floyd Medical Center and in other medical facilities throughout our community.

For several years, FMC has hosted seminars for school system Interns and, in doing so, has given them the opportunity to network with numerous professionals from a wide array of departments within the Floyd Medical facility. These interns are then assigned to a mentor who works with them on an individualized basis to expose them to a multitude of healthcare specializations.

In making the presentation, Superintendent Dr. Lynn Plunkett said, "Floyd Medical Center's commitment to the Floyd County Schools Work-Based Learning Program was clearly demonstrated this year when the hospital made the decision that the only high school students that would be given access to the hospital for internship opportunities would be students participating in the Floyd County Schools Work-Based Learning Program." Plunkett added, "It is one thing for a business to say it will sign on as a business partner, but it is quite another for that business to follow-through like FMC continues to do each year." The Floyd County Schools Work-based Learning program provides internship and youth apprenticeship opportunities for teens in Floyd County high schools. The program is coordinated by Melissa Pyle-Hamilton through the Floyd County Schools College and Career Academy.
