Gina Yu, a senior at Armuchee High School, has been selected as the school's STAR student for 2012. Yu was also selected as the system STAR Student for Floyd County and represented the school system at the region STAR banquet. Yu selected Sandra Popham, a retired teacher who taught at Armuchee Elementary and Glenwood Primary, as her STAR Teacher. Popham was Yu's teacher in the Kaleidoscope gifted program in the second grade. Yu said that she selected Popham because she made learning interesting and fun.

Gina Yu has a grade point average of 4.0 at Armuchee High. She has been chapter president of the AHS FBLA; president, vice-president, and secretary of Student Council; a member of the National Honor Society; an AP Scholar with Honor and she participated in the Governor’s Honors Program. Yu has been very active in extra-curricular activities. She lettered in cross country. She plays violin and has been a member of the Oak Hill Symphony, Buckhead Youth Orchestra and the Georgia All-state Orchestra. Yu has also been an active volunteer in the community. She took a mission trip to Puerto Rico and worked with handicapped patients at a facility in the country, she has prepared meals for patients at Mercy Senior Center and she has volunteered for the March of Dimes.

Yu has not finalized her plans for college but is considering the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill or the Georgia Institute of Technology. She has not yet selected a major.

The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) award, sponsored by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce; the Georgia Department of Education and the Professional Association of Georgia Educators, is presented to a high school senior with the school’s highest SAT score and ranking in the top ten percent or top ten members of the school’s senior class. Each STAR student selects a STAR Teacher in the recognition program.
