COOSA PART OF GROWING INTERCOUNTY RIVALRIES
Volleyball: New rivalries emerging in Floyd County
by Brittany Hannah, Staff Writer Prep Central Online Sports – Rome News-Tribune
Although volleyball is
a new sport at several schools in Floyd
County, the crowd at Coosa didn’t need any instructions on how to act during
Monday’s match. Instead, they just did
what came naturally — and created an intense environment.“It was almost like they had been watching this
sport for years,” said Coosa head coach Kate
Ross. “Every one was yelling and screaming. It was a great atmosphere.” Each
of the Floyd County teams that participated in
Monday’s match are new to the sport. Some are
playing their first year of varsity volleyball, while others are restarting
the program after a long hiatus. Ross’ team hosted Pepperell, Model, Armuchee
and Woodland during Monday’s five-team event,
and matches were played in two gyms on the Coosa
campus. “The crowd was running back and forth to each gym, and really getting
into it,” said Ross.Woodland proved to be the day’s
big winner, beating Pepperell, Model and Coosa in straight sets. But the Floyd County teams came away with some
valuable experience — and apparently some new rivalries, too. The Coosa squad earned its first win of the season, beating
Pepperell, 25-13, 25-16. The Lady Eagles also downed Model, 25-7, 25-22. “For
us to get our first win of the year was huge,” said Ross. “It really gave the
girls some confidence, and they came out strong against Model (later in the
day).” Model also came away with a win, beating Pepperell in three sets, with
the third game being a 16-14 thriller. Woodland
downed Pepperell, 25-16, 25-13 and beat Coosa,
25-16, 25-13. “It was an exciting day,” said Ross. “Our crowd has filled the gym for both of
our matches so far, and I think people are really excited about
(volleyball).”

It is expected that the young volleyball programs at Armuchee
and Coosa will endure some growing pains
this season. But the experiences will almost
certainly be befenicial in the long run.
On Tuesday, Armuchee and Coosa each suffered losses to a more
experienced Heritage squad during a three-team match at Coosa.Armuchee and Coosa also played
each other, and the two Floyd County schools battled it out in a three set
match, with Armuchee pulling out a narrow win in the third set.Heritage head coach Becky Forkner
seemed impressed by the newcomers, and had encouraging words for the
burgeoning varsity programs of Coosa and Armuchee. They’re brand new teams
... but they’re looking pretty good,” said Forkner.
“I see some potential in both of them ... I think they’ve got a lot going for
them if they’ll keep up with it; I think they’ll be in good shape.”Heritage played Coosa
first, winning two straight sets 25-6. Coosa head coach Kate Ross knew immediately what the
team had to work on.“Talking,”
she said. “We have to talk. That is the biggest thing that we struggle with over
and over again, and they see it. They know they have to talk, but they get in
a little panic, and they stop talking.”Heritage
served it up to Armuchee next, winning the first game 25-13 and the second
game 25-11.
Forkner, the Heritage coach, was pleased by
the win, but expected a better performance from her more experienced team.“We need to look better
than that,” said Forkner. “We’ve got a lot to work
on, a whole lot to work on, defensively and offensively. We’ve got a lot of
practicing to do.”
The third match between Armuchee and Coosa
went back and forth for three games.
Coosa maintained a narrow
lead in the first game after a strong serving round to clinch the win 25-20.
The next two games were even closer, but the Lady Indians refused to be
beaten, winning both games 25-23.The excitement could be heard from the
players, but Armuchee coach Stacy Payne said they could have played better at
the net.“We played a whole lot better against a AAAA or AAAAA school, I don’t know what it is,” said
Payne. “I know they were not real nervous, but it’s hard when you’re playing
a school in your county. They came out nervous, and they did not play well on
the net.”Still, Payne said the team’s serves looked
better, as did their bumps on the back row.Although
Coosa did not come away with a win, Ross remained positive.
“We played well, we got what we wanted, obviously we didn’t win,
but we got what we wanted playing wise out of it” said Ross. “The girls love
it. They’re having so much fun; I
think that is just like the best part of it.”
