Coosa girls clinch winning soccer season

Coosa Girls 4, Cedartown 0

Rome News-Tribune Staff Reports by David Dawson

The Coosa girls had several reasons to celebrate on Monday afternoon — and not even the nasty weather could ruin their excitement. With a 4-1 win over Cedartown, the Lady Eagles improved to 7-5-1 and clinched their first winning season since 1999.  Coosa’s Mayra Hernandez scored all four goals and broke the school’s single-season scoring record to punctuate the victory on Senior Day for the Lady Eagles.  “It was an all-around perfect day for us,” said Coosa second-year coach Erick Hopper.  “This was a really big step for the program. (Playing in) the cold weather and the sleet was definitely worth it today. I’m really proud of these girls.” Hopper said he challenged his team early in the season to set a new standard at Coosa — and the team delivered. “During a team meeting, I asked them how they wanted to be remembered,” he said.  “I told them they could either be known as just another losing team, or they could be the team that turned the program around. And they’ve worked their butts off this season to (become the latter).” Hernandez added to the moment by delivering her record-breaking performance. She now has 21 goals on the season.  “It’s a great accomplishment,” said Hopper, “and it just made today all the more memorable for us.” Hernandez scored the lone goal of the first half, and added three more in the final 40 minutes.  Her first and fourth goals were both unassisted. Norie Cescutti and Shelby Boyd had assists on the other two goals.  Coosa keeper Jeanie Paige Doegg had six saves.

Lady Tigers blank Coosa

Coosa Girls 0, Darlington 3

Rome News-Tribune Staff Reports by David Dawson

Flexing their defensive muscle for the third straight match, the Lady Tigers registered a 3-0 win over Coosa on Monday in a 7-AA soccer contest at the Eagles’ field. Darlington’s defense was able to shut down Coosa’s explosive sister tandem of Mayra and Maria Hernandez, who had previously been rolling up goals in bunches. (Mayra, a junior, has 17 on the season.) Overall, Coosa finished with just a handful of shots on goal, but the Lady Eagles’ defense played well enough to keep the match tight. “In terms of assessing this match, I’d have to give us mixed reviews,” said Coosa second-year coach Erick Hopper. “I felt like we played fairly decent, but we got out-hustled and that bothers me. Darlington beat us to most of the loose balls.” For Coosa, keeper Jeanie Paige Doegg recorded 12 saves. Skylar Anderson also spent time in goal, and had two saves for the Lady Eagles. Johna Collette highlighted Coosa’s defensive effort by shadowing Darlington’s Anna Shea throughout the afternoon. Ieshia Alexander and Mayra Hernandez also contributed on the defensive end. “I felt like those three players really stepped up for us today,” said Hopper.
