Course Description:  

 

Business Management helps students understand various management theories, basic management functions and their interrelationships, and the organization and competitive niche of a business.  This course will help students build a strong knowledge base and develop management skills as they study the functions of management; organizational structures; human resources management; financial management; operations management; general management skills; marketing/competitive advantage; ethics; and government regulations and community involvement.  Mastery of these standards through project-based activities will help prepare students with a competitive edge for the global marketplace.

 

Course Objectives:   

 

The class will consist of student-centered instruction concentrating on “real world” applications of business management concepts.  Students will:

 

·    Develop a general knowledge of all aspects of the world of business

·    Formulate an understanding of business and its environment

·    Identify forms of business ownership

·    Analyze information and communication systems

·    Formulate a working knowledge of management responsibilities, financial management, production and marketing management, and human resources management

 

Career Opportunities

 

Business managers formulate the policies and direct the operations of corporations, nonprofit institutions, and government agencies.  General Managers and top executives hold over three million jobs in the U.S.  They are found in every industry; however, wholesale trade, retail trade, and service industries employ over six out of ten managers.

Graded Areas:

 

·     In-class assignments

·     Homework assignments. 

·     Projects

·     Chapter/unit tests and Final Exam

*No late assignments will be accepted!

Grading:

 

All coursework will have a point value assigned.  Coursework for the semester (daily classwork, homework, etc.) will count as 25% of the final grade.  Chapter/unit tests and projects will count as 60% of the final grade.  The final exam will count as 15% of the final grade.

 

Missed Work:

 

Any work missed due to an excused absence must be made up within three days of the class missed.  Arrangements to complete missed work will be discussed on an individual basis.  Work for unexcused absences may NOT be made up and will receive a score of zero.

 

Class Rules:

 

·     Be in your seat with the proper class materials before the tardy bell rings

·     Stay in your seat unless you have permission to do otherwise

·     Follow directions the first time they are given

·     Computers should be left off unless needed for an in-class assignment

·     Keep the classroom neat.  Gum, food, drinks, and littering are unacceptable.  Do not deface school property

·     Be honest.  Do your own work

·     Follow all policies outlined in the student handbook

·     While computers will be used occasionally during this class, they should not be turned on during class unless instructed to do so.  Turning on a computer without permission will result in an immediate assignment to D-hall for one day

·     Due to the occasional misuse of computer equipment, the following rules have been established in the Coosa High School business department:

-        All computer equipment should be handled with care and used as instructed.  Misuse of equipment will be referred to the administration for applicable punishment

-        Food, drinks, and gum are not allowed in the business department.  Chronic problems will be referred to the administration

-        Any student accessing or changing system files on the computer network will be immediately sent to the administration for disciplinary action

-        Internet use is a key part of computer-related courses.  County guidelines are to be followed in this area.  Unauthorized use of the Internet will result in an immediate assignment to D-hall for one day

-        E-mail and chat rooms are not to be accessed in the business department.  Unauthorized use of the Internet will be referred to the administration for applicable punishment
