retook the helm of the Girls team in 2004 as well as the Boy's Team. The
Current head coach of the Lady Eagles team is Erick Hopper. Hopper and the

for the girls since 1999.
Lady Eagles pull off
Comeback win over Trion
The Lady Eagles are flying high
right now coming off their fourth consecutive win. Down 1-0 at the half, it
didn’t take long for the Coosa girls to come
out soaring. Two minutes into the second half Anna Hopper put in a header off
an assist from Mayra Hernandez. Ten minutes later, freshmen Dancie Pruitt scored off another assist by Hernandez. The
Lady Eagles controlled much of the game thereafter while tacking on another
score from Maria Hernandez off a free kick from thirty yards out. A defensive
breakdown allowed another goal for the lady bulldogs but Coosa
was able to hold on and earn a 3-2 decision. “I am so proud of these girls…
they never gave up and came out strong to open the second half. This team has
more character than any team I have coached. They continue to work hard and
improve every day” said coach Erick Hopper.
The Lady Eagles are now 8-5 and have secured a winning season for the
second year in a row. They will play their season finale at home against Union County on Thursday.
Coosa Girls earn big win
The Coosa
girl’s soccer team pulled off a big win beating Armuchee
1-0 for the first time in five years. Sophomore sensation Maria Hernandez
scored on a beautifully placed corner kick in the 15th minute to
give Coosa the lead. The lady eagle’s defense,
led by Dancie Pruitt, Shelby Boyd, and keeper
Chelsea Ledford, shut out the lady Indians for the rest of the game. “This is
a really big win for us and the program” said coach Erick Hopper. “Armuchee always has a solid team so for us to come out
here and beat them on their field is a big accomplishment. The girls have
worked hard all year and we have seen some big improvements over the past few
games. Maria has played well for us all year and continues to get it done on
the offensive and defensive side of the ball. I also can’t say enough about
our goalie, Chelsea Ledford. This is her first year playing soccer and she
has improved so much. She had to grow up fast back there considering we have
been to penalty kicks four times this year. Overall it was a great win and
team effort!”
Lady Eagles win on the
road
When everyone else in Floyd county
canceled because of wet conditions, the lady eagles took their show on the
road and came out with a 2-0 win over Cedartown. Esteffany
Arellano started off the game on a score in the 10th minute from a
corner kick by Maria Hernandez. A defensive battle left the score at 1-0 at
the half. In the second half, Maria Hernandez broke out and scored on an
unassisted goal 15 minutes in. With the score at 2-0, the Lady Eagles
tightened up and pitched a shutout. Goalie Chelsea Ledford had six saves in
the win.
Coosa girls sail past Rockmart
The Hernandez sisters are
becoming a household name on the local soccer scene. Coosa’s Maria and Mayra
Hernandez added another stamp to their great season on Monday night,
combining for seven goals to help the Lady Eagles to a 10-1 win over Rockmart
at Shorter College’s Ben Brady Field. The younger
of the two, Maria, led the way with four goals, and her sister, Mayra added
three. Coosa (5-5, 1-2) led 5-0 at the break
before adding to their lead in the second half. Shelby Boyd, Dancie Pruitt and Esteffany
Arellano rounded out the scoring with a goal each.
Eagles suffer loss to
Lady Blue Devils
The lady eagles fell to 0-2 in area play on Monday afternoon
after dropping a 2-0 decision to the Model Blue Devils. The lady devils got
on the board early with two goals in the first fifteen minutes. After that,
the lady eagles settled in and played a competitive ball game the rest of the
way. Coach Erick Hopper was proud of his team’s effort. “I feel like we
played a very competitive ball game. We let two early ones go by but after
that we settled in and had several opportunities. We had a one on one with
the goalie, a header that went off the post, and another great shot from
Maria Hernandez that should have been in. We just could not capitalize!” The
lady eagles will try to bounce back against Rockmart on Monday at Shorter College.
Lady Tigers roll over
Eagles
It was a tough
day for the visiting lady eagles as they lost 10-1 to Darlington
on Monday. Darlington did not waste any time
getting on the board within the first two minutes of the game. They rolled to
a 7-0 lead quickly before half. One of the few bright spots for the lady
eagles came late in the first half as Marissa Fonseca scored on an assist by
Maria Hernandez. Although it was a tough area loss, the lady eagles are going
to have to bounce back quickly when they travel to Model on Thursday.
Lady Eagles take down
Gordon Central
A day after beating Adairsville in penalty kicks, the
lady eagles took the field and pulled off another win in similar fashion
against Gordon Central. Down 1-0 early in the first half, the lady eagles
tied it up off a goal by Marissa Fonseca coming on a cross by Mayra
Hernandez. Later in the second half, the lady warriors took the lead but then
watched as Maria Hernandez scored on a free kick from 22 yards out. The rest
of the game was a defensive struggle, including overtime. For the second day
in a row the lady eagles went to penalty kicks. Goalie Chelsea Ledford saved
four of the five attempts against Gordon Central. With the game on the line,
freshmen Marissa Fonseca didn’t let nerves bother her as she nailed the
winning kick. The eagles are now 4-2 and will host Chattooga on Thursday.
Lady Eagles win
Overtime Thriller
Even the cold temperature, wind, and steady rain could
stop the lady eagles Monday afternoon as they defeated Adairsville in
overtime on penalty kicks. With wet conditions, the first half became a
defensive struggle and led to a scoreless first half. Adairsville came out
and score early in the second half to take the lead but the resilient lady eagles
battled back when Dancie Pruitt scored on an
unassisted goal, her third on the year. Later in the half, the lady tigers
added another goal to take a 2-1 lead. Coosa
quickly answered with Maria Hernandez connecting off an assist by sister
Mayra Hernandez. The score remained 2-2 for the rest of the game and
overtime, leading to penalty kicks. The Hernandez sisters stepped up and sank
the first two shots for their team. That was all goalie Chelsea Ledford
needed as she shutout the lady tigers to win the game. The puts the lady
eagles on a two game winning streak heading into Gordon Central on Tuesday.
Coosa defeats Lady Indians
After many weather cancellations and delays, the lady
eagles were ready to play Thursday as they defeated Chattooga 1-0. Playing without
three starters, some young players stepped up for the lady eagles and played
stingy defense. Leading the defense was Maria Hernandez and Goalie Chelsea
Ledford. On the offensive side, freshman Dancie
Pruitt found the goal for her second time on the year. That lone goal turned
out to be all the eagles needed as the defense stepped up to the challenge.
Chelsea Ledford had 12 saves in goal and earned her first shutout of the
season. The win evens the lady eagle’s record at 2-2. They will travel to Adairsville
on Monday.
Rough first half leads
to Home Loss
A sluggish first half led to a disappointing loss on
Tuesday afternoon for the lady eagles. In their home opener, the eagles could
not find the goal. Although the defense played tough for most of the half, a
mental breakdown led to a goal with two minutes left in the first half. Gilmer County came out and used that momentum
to build a 3-0 lead in the second half. That is when sophomore Maria
Hernandez decided to lead a comeback. She scored an unassisted goal with 18
minutes left to go in the game. Three minutes later Marissa Fonseca put in a
goal of a corner kick by Hernandez. With the score 3-2 the lady eagles found
life and controlled the last fifteen minutes of the game but we unable to
score. The loss puts the eagles at 1-2 on the season with the next match
being at Chattooga.
Coosa Dominates in Win over Rockmart
The lady eagles bounced back in dominate fashion on
Friday afternoon beating Rockmart 7-1. The eagles did not waste time scoring
in the 5th minute on a rocket shot by Maria Hernandez. Two minutes
later, sister Mayra Hernandez scored off an assist by Anna Hopper. After
battling the through the middle of the first half, the lady eagles finished
the half strong scoring five goals in the last ten minutes of the half.
During that run, Andrea Flores and freshman Dancie
Pruitt scored their first goals in their high school career. Shelby Boyd and
Anna Hopper also scored in the first half. Holding a strong 7-0 lead at half,
the lady eagles came out determined to play solid defense. Unfortunately,
they gave up the shutout as the lady jackets scored right before time
expired. “I am a little disappointed to give up the goal at the end but
building a solid lead allowed us to get everyone some playing experience
today”, said coach Erick Hopper. “We had a lot of girls step up today and
score…six different players scored. This is Dancie’s
first year playing soccer, and a freshman on top of that. Her speed is a nice
weapon to have and I look forward to seeing her improve through out the
year!” The win evens the lady eagle’s record at 1-1 and they will host Gilmer County on Tuesday.
Lady Eagles lose
Heartbreaking opener
The lady eagles lost their season opener on a cold
Tuesday night at Sonoraville. The eagles started
off strong scoring in the 9th minute off a penalty kick. Sophomore
Maria Hernandez stepped up and sank it to give the Coosa
a 1-0 lead. A determined defense and outstanding play by first year goalie
Chelsea Ledford would allow that lead would hold up all the way until ten
minutes left in the game when a defensive breakdown left the net open and Sonoraville capitalized. After a scoreless ten minutes,
the game went into overtime. It was a defensive struggle throughout overtime
with both teams stepping up. The lady eagles went to penalty kicks for only
the second time in the past three years. Unfortunately, the lady eagles were
stopped on all five attempts and lost 2-0 in the penalty kicks session giving
Sonoraville the win. This makes the second year in
a row that Coosa has lost to Sonoraville in overtime.
Although the team loss, Coach Hopper was really proud of the way his
team battled; “I was really impressed with the toughness the girls played
with. Chelsea
played an outstanding game in goal and made some crucial saves down the
stretch. These ladies work hard and I know they will be ready to bounce back
at Rockmart.” The Lady Eagles (0-1) will travel to Rockmart on Friday.
Coosa Girls Excited about 2010 Season
Fresh off their first winning season since 1999, the Coosa Lady Eagles soccer team is looking to make it
back to back winning seasons. Five Seniors consisting of Mayra Hernandez, Isis Arroyo, Shelby Boyd, Bekah
Young, and Johna Collette plan on leading the way
for a big group of underclassmen. The group of seniors will also get help
from sophomore sensation Maria Hernandez, who was second on the team in
scoring and assist last season. Another Sophomore, Chelsea Ledford, will try
to make a transition from softball to soccer in hopes of giving the lady
eagles some consistency in goal this year. Third year coach, Erick Hopper,
believes his team can improve off last year’s success and be even better. “I
have seen so much improvement since my first year. The girl’s have really
bought in to what we are doing and have worked hard to get better every
year”. The Lady Eagles will open up the 2010 season on the road against
Cedartown on February 23rd.
