Eagles fall to GAC in Second Round of State
Tournament
In spite
of a lot of enthusiasm and tough play, Coosa
fell to Greater Atlanta Christian 8-0 tonight in the metro Area. The Eagles would like to thank the fans,
parents, Faculty, staff and Administration for all of the support the team
received this season.
Coosa Notches first ever 2nd Round Birth with
Playoff Win over Carver
By
Alex Ferrar, Rome-News Tribune: Photo by Ryan Smith, RN-T. The Coosa boys soccer team made school history on Monday,
and, in the process, gave their coach a little escape from a rather gloomy
last few days.
The Eagles dominated Carver-Columbus in the first round of the state
tournament for a 10-1 win, marking their first ever postseason victory.
Coosa coach Randy Vice, whose house was
destroyed during last Wednesday’s severe storms, said he was proud of the way
his kids played after an odd schedule over the last week. “It was a rough
week for us,” said Vice. “This is the first time the guys have
been on the field in a week, and they did a wonderful job today. “We had
great support from the community, and I appreciate everything everyone has
done.”
Brayan Cornejo led the Eagles with four goals and two assists, and Kevin
Camacho had two goals and an assist. Sixto Moraga, who Vice said is the
unquestioned team leader, had a goal and three assists.
“I’m really pleased with how our guys played,” said Vice. “In the first half,
we were having a little trouble communicating, but mostly I just told them
they needed to be able to focus on what they needed to do.” Stephen Walters,
Emac Arroyo and Gustavo Vasquez also had goals in the win. Walters, Cesar
Cornejo and Max Gonzalez all had assists. Coosa
was solid in goal as well with two keepers combining for a big day.
Logan Watkins started and had seven saves before Dustin Teems relieved him
and had 11 saves of his own.
The Eagles will now prepare for a huge test in the second round. They will
visit the No. 1 team in Class AA, GAC, on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
“We have quite a challenge in front us,” said Vice. “They are the No. 1 team
for a reason, but we still have to prepare like every other game and see what
happens.
“We’ve just got to do what we do. If you try to change too many things,
everything starts getting crazy.”

Coosa boys soccer coach Randy
Vice beamed at his players Monday afternoon shortly after the Eagles
dispatched Carver-Columbus 10-1 in the opening round of the Class AA
playoffs.
In the post-game huddle, Vice told his players how proud he was of them and
how they’d handled the last few days. For a moment, he paused looked down and
gulped, then the smile returned. As the team broke the huddle chanting, “Do
what we do,” more than a few players came over to hug their coach or pat him
on the back.
The players weren’t just showing affection for their coach because Coosa had just won its first playoff soccer game, but
because Vice was one of many hit by the storm on the night of April 27.
That evening, Vice was talking to Rome News-Tribune sportswriter Jonathan
Blaylock moments before his house and most of his possessions were destroyed.
Blaylock was getting quotes for a preview story about the game. Vice gave
some quotes and then politely said he had to go because a tornado was coming.
The tornado caused the postponement of Coosa’s
game for a few days — and made the victory all the sweeter when it occurred.
“I’m very lucky because I have my family and my kids and no one got hurt,” he
said. “These guys came out and overcame a lot of hardships and played great.
This was a huge win for Coosa soccer, and
this might be the best moment in this program’s history.”
Saying the previous five days had been a blur would be an understatement.
Coosa High didn’t have power until over the weekend. Vice’s players hadn’t
been to a practice in almost a week. In fact, a lot of his players’ homes
suffered damage as well. But what the team didn’t get in practice time, they
made up for in helping out.
“A lot of these guys came out to my house to help. They were cutting trees
and helping cleanup and a lot of them had damage to their own homes,” Vice
said. “That just tells you how good these kids are.”
On Monday, it took Coosa less than six
minutes to record the first goal and by halftime the Eagles were soaring with
a 6-0 lead. Coach didn’t have to worry too much although he had one outburst
midway through the first half, when he felt the defense wasn’t communicating.
“I wasn’t mad at them, but they have to realize they’ve got to communicate,
or it’s going to hurt them down the road,” he said.
Monday’s celebration was a bit muted. Right before the team huddled, a couple
of players doused Vice with a victory ice water bath. Moments after the
huddle ended, his mind turned to today’s second-round opponent, Greater
Atlanta Christian.
“We’ve really got our work cut out for us. They’re the No. 1 team in the
state in AA, and one of the top six in the state overall (in all
classifications),” he said. “This is going to be a tough test for us.”
Before April 27, the players and coaches might have said GAC represented the
toughest challenge they had faced. On Monday afternoon, they realized GAC
might be tough, but the tornado and storm which damaged so many of their
homes was tougher.
“I’m just blessed and really lucky. I’ve got my family and my kids. My house
is gone. My parents house is gone, but we’re still alive,” he said. Vice’s
story represents one of many we’ll hear over the coming weeks. A story about
the survival of the human spirit and others giving back and moving ahead when
most of what they owned was literally blown away.
But Vice doesn’t want to focus on his story. He wants to focus on the
players, the coaches, administrators and fans that offered help.
Tonight’s game comes almost exactly a
week after the storms. Coosa plays the role
of David to GAC’s Goliath. The top-ranked and seemingly unstoppable force
from the private school in Atlanta
takes on an opponent which won its first state soccer playoff game Monday.
But sometimes a bit of perspective helps. Coosa’s
players have already played the role of David. On April 27, Goliath was an
EF2 tornado. The Eagles may have lost homes and power and possessions, but
they ultimately won the fight.
How can a group of high schoolers compare to the forces Coosa
has already fought and survived? On Monday, Vice didn’t want to talk about
the possibilities of an upset. “No matter what happens on Wednesday, this has
been a great season and I’m so proud of these kids and how far they’ve come,”
he said.
Odds are Coosa’s season ends tonight. GAC
hails from Region 5-AA, which has time and again had its teams send the teams
from Region 7-AA packing in the playoffs. In fact, the Eagles could lose by
six or seven goals.
In 17 years of covering sports, I’ve witnessed some major upsets. Two or
three of those came in the state soccer playoffs in Florida. Coosa
winning would rank as one of the biggest. As a sportswriter, I’m not
supposed to openly pull for teams I cover. Let’s be honest. When our teams
reach the playoffs, I do hope they win. On Wednesday, I won’t be able to make
the trip to GAC. But I know the Coosa
players are going to play their hearts out. My brain tells me no way, but my
heart reminds me it’s happened before.
No matter the score tonight, Coosa’s
players, coaches and fans go down as winners, as do the thousands of people
effected by last week’s storms. But wouldn’t it be nice if for the second
time in a week the Eagles conquered the odds and flew a bit higher than the
storm or their opponents?
Maybe it happens. Maybe not. But at game’s end, I guarantee Coach Vice will
be smiling and thanking his players and counting his blessings that he and
his family can continue rebuilding.

Coosa to Host Carver-Columbus in State Playoffs
Coosa will
host 5AA Carver on Friday, April 29th at Eagle Stadium. The game
will begin at 7pm.
Eagles Fall to Calhoun Finish Second in 7AA
J. Blaylock, Rome
News-Tribune Sportswriter
The Calhoun soccer team carried a No. 1 seed into the
region tourney — and their status won’t change for the upcoming state
tournament. The Jackets won the Region 7-AA title on Monday, downing Coosa 4-0, to claim a No. 1 seed for the state event.
Coosa,
which likewise entered the region tourney as a No. 1 seed after winning the
South subregion title, will be a No. 2 seed at state. “Give Coosa
a lot of credit,” Calhoun coach Reuben Maldonado said. “They were the No. 1
team in the subregion for a reason.” Some fans believed the Coosa
team would have a rebuilding year this season. Instead, the young Eagles team have roared
through the year and are headed to the state event with plenty of
confidence. The Eagles (13-6), who
have nine freshmen on the team and only three seniors, will host the No. 3
seed of Region 5 on April 29 at the Coosa High football stadium. “Calhoun has a great program,” Coosa coach Randy Vice said. “Coach Reuben has done a
great job with them, but we’re better than we played today. I’m proud of how
far the team has come. We thought this would be a rebuilding year.” Coosa goalkeeper Logan Watkins had 14 saves. The Eagles were in the hole early, as the
Yellow Jackets scored three goals in the first half. Luis Cervantes scored the Jackets’ first
goals off an assist from Miguel Moreno. Moreno
had another assist on the next goal, scored by Efren Martinez. Alex Hernandez
gave the Jackets the 3-0 lead just before halftime when he scored on a
penalty kick. “I told the guys if we could
score one more goal, they would fall apart,” Maldonado said. “It took us a
while to get it, but it paid off.”
That final goal came with 33 minutes left in the second
half when Morena and Cervantes hooked up again for Cervantes’ second goal of
the game.
Calhoun will host the No. 4 seed out of Region 6 in the
opening round of state.
“We’ve got to stay focused,” Maldonado said. “We’re
going to see some tougher teams.”
Eagle’s Host Calhoun in Region Championship
The Coosa
High School Boy’s soccer team will play Calhoun in the Region Championship
game this Saturday at 11 am at Coosa Middle School. Calhoun Coach Reuben Maldonado called tails
before Building engineer Jan Williams tossed the coin Friday morning. The coin landed on heads, awarding host
site privilages to the Eagles.

Sixto Moraga Signs with
Shorter College
After
weighing his options between several schools, Sixto Moraga has signed with Shorter University. Shorter’s local position
and its oustanding academic program, along with Sixto’s regard for Coach Josh
Severns, helped in the decision to go to Shorter. “Sixto told me about two
weeks ago that he wanted to stay close to home, ie..Berry
or Shorter, though he enjoyed his trip to Southern Poly and appreciated
meeting coach Saulo Franca from Atlanta Christian” stated Coosa
coach Randy Vice. “His excellent academic record at Coosa
made qualifying at all the schools easy, He is the total package as a

One STAR
Student and Teacher will be recognized at each of the area high schools
during the next week or so, and a winner from each school system will be

a district banquet later in the semester. Van Curen, who recently accepted an
appointment to the United
States Military Academy, said he picked Eric Johansen as his STAR teacher because
the teacher helped him gain a better understanding of a subject he has not
always enjoyed. “I have always been kind of a math guy, and I still love
math,” said Van Curen, “but when I had American literature with him, I gained

The
Coosa Eagles got their prep soccer season started in a big way on Wednesday
evening with a shortened 10-0 shutout against 7-AA South rival Model on the
road. Coosa’s Sixto Moraga played a large
role in the win, scoring five goals for the Eagles (1-0, 1-0), and
contributed three assists. “It’s always a good to start with a win,” Coosa coach Randy Vice said. “Model and Coosa is always a good rivalry. I’m really excited
about our team. The attitudes of the guys have really impressed me. They
worked really. I can’t say enough about the whole team.”
Also for Coosa, Brayon Cornejo, Emilio Deleon, Steven Walters,
Kevin Camacho and Emmanuel Arroyo each scored a goal. Moraga, Cornejo, and Paco Miranda each had
three assists, and William Moraga had one.
Coosa goalkeeper Logan Watkins had six saves for
the shutout during his first-ever start in goal. Justin Teems finished the
last six minutes of the match with one save. The Eagles outshot the Blue
Devils 44-6.
Model
first-year coach Donnie Mendence said his team has a lot of talent, but he
sees things they need to improve on.
“I
think we’ve got a fairly strong team,” he said. “I don’t think we showed it
tonight. We didn’t play as a team. We’re going to have to fix this thing and
figure out how to work as a team.”
Highlighting
Model’s performance was goalkeeper Adam Fredrick with 30 saves.

Walters and William Moraga had the two assists. “
We actually got a lot accomplished this afternoon” stated CHS Head Coach
Randy Vice, “Emac stepped up big in the 2nd half and I felt the
defense got into a groove late in the game”.
“We made some adjustments that seemed to work a lot better”. Vice added “I am concerned at the
goalkeeper position only because of the lack of experience. Veteran keeper Davey Siefert has been
injured for the week preceding today’s scrimmage and that left us with 2
backups who had never played in a varsity match”.
