and Technology program earns Industry Certification

Industry certification means that the program is teaching skills graduates will need to be successful for the future. Industry Certification is a validation from the local and state community that Coosa High School engineering and technology students are being prepared to meet and exceed the challenges and opportunities found in the industry today. Program certification ensures that a school is providing quality education that brings out the best in every student. The CHS Engineering and Technology program completed the certification requirements on Thursday, May 6th, 2010 and was awarded plaques and a banner at the 2010 GACTE conference held July 19th – 22nd at the Cobb Galleria. Coach Allen Gossett and the students in the Technology Student Association (TSA) spent a year on the extensive certification process. Despite this being classified as a re-certification, the process is essentially the same as that of a program seeking certification for the first time. During the final program evaluation, CHS students were very involved in the programs successful application for recertification. Students Gesler Carranza-Tello, Alondra Chavez, Davey Siefert, Ilse Chavez, Sam Porterfield, Tyler Young, and Kyle Hubbard participated in presentations during the evaluation visit. The students prepared a multimedia presentation showing all the various programs that the engineering and technology students participate in, highlighting the activities and accomplishments of the Coosa CAP TSA chapter. (A CAP chapter means the entire student body has been included in the membership program.) Program Certification was implemented by SAME and the state to promote high quality instruction in engineering and technology education at the high school level. Competency standards and specific performance objectives provide the foundation for a solid curriculum based in engineering and technology. The Society of American Military Engineers and the Georgia Department of Education (GADOE) have determined the core employability skills in the areas of thinking skills, basic computer skills, interpersonal skills, and the use of technology are essential in a successful high school program. An Industry Certified program must also require specific performance objectives and standards be incorporated in each high school course to meet the criteria of an exceptional engineering and technology education program. |
The Coosa High School Engineering and Technology program has earned re-certification by the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME.) – Atlanta Post and the Georgia Department of Education Career and Technology Education Division. Coosa High passed the 71 Industry Certification standards/criteria and will be certified for the next five years as meeting the highest of industry standards. The program was reviewed by a committee representing SAME and the Georgia Department of Education during the month of May.
