Students and teachers in Floyd County Schools have once again opened their hearts and their cupboards to help those in need during the holidays.  During the annual Salvation Army Can-A-Thon event sponsored by 11Alive news in Atlanta, Floyd County Schools collected and donated over 149,972 cans to the annual charity event.  The school totals helped to make the Rome effort one of the largest collection locations in the nation.

Model Middle School once again led all schools and organizations with 54,478 cans.  This was the third year in a row that Model Middle has been the largest donator of can goods to the community effort to feed the hungry. The school has collected over 181,000 cans over the last three years. Pepperell Middle School students were the second largest contributor by collecting 32,397 this year.  Model Elementary School made it a sweep of the top three spots in the community by finishing third 17,648 cans donated.

The top three community contributors were presented a special plaque by the Salvation Army for their efforts.  Students, teachers, and parent volunteers loaded buses and trucks with cans for the trip to State Mutual Stadium to make their donation.  Students also volunteered to help the event organizers to unload the donated cans.
