Local business received March sales tax reports from the Department of Revenue that listed an incorrect sales tax to begin in April
that could impact SPLOST collection for school projects in Rome and Floyd County. The sales tax report incorrectly listed the sales
tax to be collected at 6% beginning in April but Floyd County Schools has confirmed with the Department of Revenue that the information
in their notices sent to local businesses was in error. The DOR confirmed that the local sales tax rate for Floyd County will continue
at 7% after March 31, 2009 rather than the rate shown on their March 2009 sales tax report. The rate was listed in error due to
a miscommunication at the state level.
According to officials from the Georgia Department of Revenue, local retailers can visit the department of Revenue web site at http: www.etax.dor.ga.gov to
confirm the rate to be collected after March 31, 2009. Local businesses will not receive written notification of the correction
from the Department of Revenue until the official April sales tax report arrives. Notice of the correction is made on the web site
listing.
It is vital to our local schools that Local businesses continue to collect the sales tax at a rate of 7% in April. The seamless
continuation of the sales tax to remain at 7% was approved by the voters of Floyd County last September 16, 2008. The one cent
sales tax will provide needed projects for Floyd County and Rome City Schools.
The marquee project for Floyd County Schools is the construction of a new Model High School facility. The Floyd County Board of
Education has selected Ra-Lin Construction to be the construction manager at-risk for the Model project. A groundbreaking ceremony
will be held for the new school in May with construction work set to begin after the last school day for students on May 22, 2009.
Floyd County Schools has started an intensive communication effort to inform businesses and retailers in the area of the error in the
March tax listing. We hope that this effort to communicate the error in tax notification is a benefit to local businesses as it
will save time and resources unnecessarily expended to change the tax rate charged to customers. |
