Floyd County students will be eligible to receive a free flu shot at school this year.  The forms have been sent home with students to get parental permission to provide free flu shots to all students in Floyd County Schools.  The vaccine will be administered by personnel from the Floyd County Health Department at the school sites.  This will take away a couple of excuses for students not getting their flu shots.  The vaccine will be free, they will not have to find transportation to where the shots are administered and they will not have to take additional time out of their day to get the vaccine.  It is time for students to roll up their sleeves and stay healthy this flu season.

Flu and flu like health problems cause many students to miss school during the winter months.  It is hoped that with more students getting the vaccine that more students will be in attendance for important classroom instruction.  “It is vital that children be in school to take advantage of the classroom instruction time that is provided in our schools, “commented Dr. Lynn Plunkett, superintendent of Floyd County Schools.  “It is our hope that our classroom attendance will improve which will impact what our students learn.”

The free flu shots are funded by a grant through the Northwest Georgia Public Health District from the state of Georgia. The grant is called the “Public Health Enhancement Grant.”  The grant was awarded to the Floyd County Health Department.   According to Judie Fellers, RN PHNC with the Floyd County Health Department and coordinator of the school nurse program in Floyd County Schools, students and their families are responding in large numbers to the free flu shots.  The Health Department plans to be at each school beginning at 8:30 a.m. on the day scheduled and be there for most of the school day.  The free flu shots will begin today at Alto Park Elementary and run through December 3, 2008.

The schedule includes:
