David McLaughlin, a reading
teacher for Floyd County Schools, has won a competition to
represent the “Heading Left” viewpoint on the Fox
News Radio contest “Election 2008: Battle of the Blog
Talkers.” McLaughlin and Kevin
Ross of Los Angeles were crowned “America’s
Best Blog Talkers” for the left and right, respectively.
The two winning BlogTalkRadio hosts beat six other contestants
in last week’s “Battle of the Blog Talkers." Listeners
decided the top performers.
Starting Monday, McLaughlin and Ross will join Spencer
Hughes of Fox News Radio on
the program “Fox Across America.” The group will
co-host a week's worth of election shows from 8 to 9 a.m. EDT.
McLaughlin had to work his way through several rounds of head-to-head
competition with other bloggers to earn the spot on the show
with Hughes. During the competition, Hughes moderated
debates between two bloggers from BlogTalkRadio’s station.
Each blogger was given five minutes of uninterrupted time to
respond to the same topic. Listeners voted (via mobile-text
message and online poll) for their favorite blog talker, who
in turn moved onto the next round.
During
the day, McLaughlin teaches reading to students at Armuchee
Middle and Coosa Middle Schools. An active
local Democrat, McLaughlin launched the weekly Kudzu Vine
Web radio show on Blog
Talk Radio in April 2007.
Launched in August 2006, BlogTalkRadio is a web-based talk-show
platform that
allows any user with an Internet connection to host a live,
interactive radio show – no downloads or extra equipment
needed. Hosts call into the service by phone to broadcast.
Each show can accommodate unlimited live listeners. Upon
completion of the live broadcast, it is automatically archived
as a podcast. Since the company’s launch, thousands
of hosts have broadcast more than 130,000 shows.
