Ashley Jones, a junior at Coosa High School, has been selected as one of 55 students from across the state to serve on the Superintendent's Advisory Council. The students will meet four times with Superintendent Kathy Cox during the year to discuss issues important to students in Georgia’s public schools.  The students will advise Superintendent Cox on how state policies are having an impact in the classroom. The Student Advisory Council will also discuss other education-related issues and will serve as the Superintendent's ambassadors in their respective schools.

More than 700 students from 120 districts applied to be a member of the Student Advisory Council by filling out an application and answering essay questions. Students were chosen based on the strength of their essay answers, as well as their school performance and involvement.

Ashley Jones will attend the first of the four meetings of the Student Advisory Council on October 20, 2008, at Georgia Perimeter College in Clarkston.   In a Georgia Department of Education release Superintendent Cox said, “The Student Advisory Council is an invaluable resource to me and the leadership of the Georgia Department of Education." Cox added, "It gives me a tremendous insight into how state policies and procedures are working in the classroom and it allows me to communicate directly with students in schools throughout Georgia."
