Dr. Lynn Plunkett has been selected as the new superintendent
to lead Floyd County Schools. Dr. Plunkett was the unanimous
selection of the Floyd County Board of Education at a called
meeting on Thursday evening, April 3. Plunkett was one
of three finalists for the position announced by the board
in March. There was an eruption of cheers and applause
from the audience assembled for the board announcement as soon
as the motion was made to select Dr. Lynn Plunkett as the new
superintendent. The board had to pause for several moments
before finalizing the selection with a vote. “Dr.
Plunkett will do a wonderful job for the children of Floyd
County,” stated Bryan Shealy, chairman of the Floyd County
Board of Education.
Dr. Plunkett has served
as interim superintendent of Floyd County Schools since Kelly
Henson’s retirement in November. She
served as deputy superintendent in charge of teaching and learning
prior to being named interim superintendent. She has also
served as assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction
in the system. Prior to coming to Floyd County Schools in 2001,
Plunkett was an educational assessment program manager for the
Georgia Department of Education. She has also been an administrator
or teacher in Bartow County Schools, Marietta City Schools, and
Cobb County Schools. Plunkett started her education career
as a teacher at West Rome Junior High School.
Dr. Plunkett is local product who has returned to lead the
school system that provided her early educational training. She
is a graduate of Coosa High School and her family has been
long time residents of Floyd County. “I could not
think of a better place to be,” Plunkett said. “This
is a great school system because of the wonderful people in
this room and the many others across the school system working
each day to improve the lives of our children.” Plunkett
thanked the group for their support during the interim period
and pledged to continue moving Floyd County Schools forward. She
said, “Working together, I know that this group of caring,
committed educators can continue our system’s progression
to be recognized as one of the best school systems in the country.”
Plunkett
has been a major part of a series of improvements in Floyd
County Schools over the last seven years. The
system instituted an honors college prep curriculum to challenge
students and prepare them for success after high school. Small
community high schools now offer four foreign language options
to students where only one was available prior to 2001. Advanced
course offerings have been added to the middle school curriculum. The
school system has been rated an “Outperformer” by
business and industry leader Standard and Poor’s. A
partnership was formed with the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce
and Coosa Valley Technical College to gain approval for a new
charter school career academy. Plus, Plunkett has helped
develop Intersession remedial programs built into a modified
school calendar to make sure that all children in Floyd County
Schools have the best possible opportunity to succeed. |
