Floyd County Schools and Georgia Highlands College have formed a fabulous partnership to promote positive futures for Floyd County sixth graders.  The school system and college will hold a series of events billed as “Fabulous Fridays” to introduce young students to the college experience.  The first “Fabulous Friday” will take place this Friday, October 12, 2007 from 9 AM to 2 PM at Georgia Highlands College.

Over 15 Fridays, groups of sixth graders from Floyd County middle schools will visit the Rome campus of Georgia Highlands College to experience a college campus, and learn about the opportunities available for them at the college.  In conjunction with the “Fabulous Fridays,” Georgia Highlands will also host a parent/student night for parents to learn more about opportunities for their children at Georgia Highlands College.  The parent/student nights will be held on November 29, 2007 for students and parents from the Armuchee and Model communities and on April 29, 2008 for the Pepperell and Coosa communities.  The parent/student nights will be held in the Lakeview Building at Georgia Highlands College.  A light dinner will be provided for those attending. The events will begin at 6:00PM and last about 90 minutes. Parents and siblings of the sixth graders are welcome to attend the parent/student night activities.

The goals of the “Fabulous Fridays” are:

  • Provide opportunities for middle school students and parents to visit a college campus.
  • Provide opportunities for middle school students and their parents to learn about college preparation requirements during middle and high school.
  • Provide opportunities for middle school students and their parents to learn about college admission requirements and financial aid options.

The program is in support of the University System of Georgia Chancellor’s efforts in developing early outreach programs.  The mission of the “Fabulous Fridays” program at Georgia Highlands College is to provide early outreach informational and exposure programs to students and their parents to enhance and improve the number of students considering college.
