Alyshia Burris and Bobby Venable, seniors at Armuchee High School, have been selected as the first recipients of Thomas G. Harris Scholarships.  This is the first year the scholarships have been presented at Armuchee.

Former Armuchee High School teacher, Mr. Thomas G. Harris, was recently honored by anonymous donors with a scholarship bearing his name.  The scholarship is a four-year award and will provide room and board for a student attending a Georgia college on the HOPE scholarship.

Many have been known to say that teaching is a thankless profession. Teachers can toil in anonymity for years known only to the thousands of students whose lives they touch each day.  Thomas G. Harris, a teacher who has impacted the lives of many a young student in the Armuchee community in the past, will now become an important figure to Armuchee students of the present and future.

Thomas G. Harris taught math and coached basketball during his 41 years at Armuchee High School.  Harris acknowledged that he was somewhat surprised by the recognition. He said, "I always enjoyed my years of teaching and it is nice to be remembered by former students."  Harris returned to his home community of Jenkins County, Georgia, upon his retirement in 1987.
