Tammy Van Der Horn, a sixth-grade Kaleidoscope student at Model Middle School has won the First District, Georgia Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy 2007 Essay Contest. Tammy's essay on  "The Confederate Marine Corps" won the sixth grade division.  Tammy received an award of $25 in recognition of her efforts.

Tammy is a student in Mrs. Angie Yancey's gifted English Language Arts class.   Ms. Van Der Horn was originally born in South Africa but moved to the United States with her family at the age of eight.  The essay experience helped Van Der Horn to better understand the history of the region.  She said, in her still distinct British accent, "Since I'm South African, I gained a lot more knowledge about the Civil War history of the United States."
