Kelly C. Henson, superintendent of Floyd County Schools, has been elected to the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) Governing Board.  Henson is one of three superintendents from Georgia elected to serve on the AASA board.  Elected members serve three year terms on the national board.  The purpose of the Governing Board is to set direction for operations of AASA.  Membership on the AASA Governing Board is based upon the number of eligible voting members in each state affiliate. Each state affiliate is guaranteed at least two representatives on the Governing Board.

Kelly Henson has been superintendent of schools in Floyd County since 2001.  He has overseen a number of dramatic changes in the school system.  The system has implemented a new calendar structure with "Intersessions" built into the added calendar breaks to give additional instruction time to students who need the extra help, implemented a respected advanced college prep curriculum, and is developing a new career academy charter school.  Innovations in the school system have drawn interest from school system leaders from across the country.  Henson was a finalist for the 2006 Georgia Superintendent of the Year.

AASA policy is set by its 140-member governing board, comprised almost entirely of active school superintendents. This structure assures that AASA is truly a national organization with an agenda that reflects the viewpoints of school administrators throughout the country.

Governing Board members have a dual representation - each elected person on the AASA Governing Board represents a home state on the national governing body of AASA and in turn the same member represents the national body to every AASA member in the state/affiliate. The Board recommends the AASA advocacy platform, changes in by-laws or membership dues, new communications approaches and more.

Because practicing superintendents establish and oversee AASA's goals, it is the national association most directly concerned with public education leadership. AASA's governing structure engages the considerable talents of a diverse, dynamic membership. The grass-roots structure encourages broad member participation in governance, issues and programming.
