Jeff Shiflett, last season's defensive coordinator at Pepperell High School , was named the new head coach of the Dragons on Thursday, February 22, 2007.  Phil Ray, principal of Pepperell High made the announcement of the promotion from within the Dragon's coaching staff.  Ray said, "Coach Shiflett is a well-respected leader on our faculty and he possesses the skills necessary to lead our football program into a new era.  I am confident of a smooth transition as Jeff Shiflett continues the rich traditions of Pepperell High School ."

Coach Shiflett has been a part of the Pepperell High staff since 1994 working with retiring head coach, Lynn Hunnicutt.  He served last year as defensive coordinator for the Dragons.  Shiflett has also coached the defensive and offensive lines, tight ends, running backs and special teams over the years.  Coach Shiflett has been a major contributor in the PHS football team's success.  The Dragons were 2006 region co-champion, reached the state playoffs ten times and achieved a record of 97 wins and 47 losses since 1994.

Coach Shiflett is recognized for his commitment to the students he works with.  He was honored last month as the February, Distinguished Service Award winner by the Floyd County Board of Education.  Coach Shiflett was nominated for the award by a parent.  The parent wrote, "Our son was invited to Shorter College  through the football office. Coach Shiflett took the time out of his busy school/football season to spend a Saturday helping our family. He led us through the process and answered the many questions we had. Coach Shiflett was the only coach at Shorter College that day representing any student athlete. Coach Shiflett is a good teacher, coach, and man; that is willing to give more than necessary to support our children."

Coach Shiflett has been active in other athletic programs at Pepperell High.  He has served as the head coach for the wrestling program for the last seven years.  He has served as head baseball coach, an assistant baseball coach and he coached J.V. basketball.

Jeff Shiflett is also recognized as an excellent teacher.  He was the 2001 Pepperell High "Teacher of the Year" and teaches computer, finance and accounting.  He received his undergraduate degree in Business Management from the University of West Georgia and has earned his M.S. Ed. degree in Educational Administration from Jacksonville State University .

Coach Shiflett's wife, Janie, serves as the media specialist at Pepperell Elementary School.  The Shifletts have three sons and reside in the Lindale community.
