Model High School students Dustin Raymer, Matt Kelley, and Kacie Rollins were the regional winners for the Floyd County Region in the fall 2006 Georgia Stock Market Game competition coordinated by the Georgia Council on Economic Education. The students participated in the Stock Market Game in Dr. Adam B. Clemons' Economics class at Model High.

Teams of students from across the state competed in regional competitions in the Stock Market Game. Each team begins with a hypothetical $100,000 to invest in stocks listed on the major exchanges. The students can buy on margin, sell short and just like real investors they had to pay commission fees on each transaction. The Model High team's winning portfolio was valued at over $128,986.

The Model High team competed against over 105 other teams regionally and placed 30th in the state out of 3,578 teams. More than 25,000 students participate in the Georgia Stock Market Game each year, with competitions held in the fall and spring. An awards luncheon for the regional and statewide winning teams will be held in Atlanta in the spring.

Since 1972 the mission of the Georgia Council on Economic Education has been to "help teachers teach economics in the public and independent schools of Georgia,' which supports a vision of " students leaving school prepared for their economic roles as workers, consumers, savers, investors, and citizens in a globally interdependent world." The Council is supported by businesses, foundations, and individuals across the state. Visit the Council's website at www.gcee.org.

The Georgia Stock Market Game is made possible by support from the Atlanta Society of Financial Analysts, Bank of America, the Georgia Securities Association, INVESCO, Primerica and the Citigroup Foundation, and the Foundation for Investor Education, which coordinates the nationwide Stock Market Game.
