Resource Room
The delivery model for Floyd County Schools at the elementary
level is the resource pull-out model with its emphasis on
interdisciplinary thematic studies. This program requires
that students be pulled out of the regular classroom. Students
who are identified as gifted are required by State Regulations
to be served a minimum of 5 segments per
week and may be served a maximum of 10 segments. Service
for gifted students is a state requirement to
meet their individual needs and cannot be used as an option,
reward, or a privilege.
Grades in Kaleidoscope
Kaleidoscope students are evaluated annually through the
Annual Review. Each student is graded with S, N, or U in the
areas of attendance, class participation, completion of assignments,
and behavior. In addition, progress reports will be
sent home with report cards every 9 weeks or at the end of
a unit.
Make-Up Work in the Regular Classroom
- Students who are pulled out of class for Kaleidoscope
are counted present in every class missed because their Kaleidoscope
service is a part of their educational plan. They should
not be required to make-up all of the assignments missed
in the regular classroom.
- The students are not responsible for completing every worksheet
or activity that is assigned in their absence. Rather,
the students need only to have met the instructional objectives. This
same principle applies to homework. This does not mean
that students are excused from homework. However,
if the regular class has the opportunity to begin work on
their homework assignments in class while the Kaleidoscope
does not, please consider the total amount of homework that
the Kaleidoscope student will have to complete.
- Each teacher should help ensure that Kaleidoscope students
have the opportunity to receive appropriate services without
penalty. Our students should not feel punished by being
overloaded with classwork or homework waiting for them when
they return from Kaleidoscope class. If this happens,
we are penalizing our students, rather than supporting their
right to service in their special needs area.
- Kaleidoscope students should not be denied academic recognition
and awards due to time or work missed while receiving Kaleidoscope
services.
- Tests, labs, reports, projects, and other major assignments
should not be made-up before or after school. The teacher
and student should work together to make alternate arrangements
to assure that the assignment is completed in a reasonable
time period agreed upon by the teacher and the student.
- Time spent
in the Kaleidoscope program is governed by State Regulations. Therefore,
students are not to miss any of the scheduled time for Kaleidoscope. Classroom
assignments due on the day the student is to attend Kaleidoscope
are to be turned in later that day or the next scheduled
class time.
- Kaleidoscope
students should succeed in their academic classes. By
not requiring all daily assignments in addition to Kaleidoscope
assignments for these students, the classroom teacher can take
some of the pressure off and encourage their success. The
thinking skills gifted students are learning and practicing
in Kaleidoscope can only enhance their performance in regular
education classes.
Grades in the Regular Classroom
Students should be given the chance to make-up any graded
work (tests, projects, classwork) they missed while in Kaleidoscope. Students
can not be given a 0 on an assignment or test due to their
absence while in Kaleidoscope. The teacher and student
should work together for the student to make-up this grade,
or exclude that particular assignment from the average.
